It's a case study of how a person is drawn in, step by step, to the allure of power and money through gambling opportunities. I'm in. I disagree but not strongly. The central character, Molly, never makes a single bet in the traditional sense of the word. It would be like calling Oceans 11 a gambling movie. To call a movie a gambling movie, I think the central character(s) has/(ve) to gamble. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

If that's your criteria, I would agree with you. My criteria is more, does it revolve around a substantial aspect of gambling. So I would call Oceans 11 and 13 gambling movies, Oceans 12 not. 12 had gambling figures (andy Cohen and Reubin) involved in the stakes, but the target and the plot did not revolve around casinos. Significant plot aspects of 11 and 13 were unique to gambling. Similarly, Molly's Game would not have happened if it were not for gaming, it being semi-legal depending on the state, the game itself becoming addictive to people with too much money and looking for a non-substance based high, the closed and secretive nature of it being gambling rather than any other bonding activity. It also brings out aspects of gaming from the viewpoint of not the gambler, but the people who make gaming possible. I find that an interesting perspective that further informs my decisions of when and where to gamble. I suspect your life would make an interesting movie, were it possible to tell the story of your time at shall-not-be-named. (Still plenty of other things to highlight, bit that would be a glaring omission). But very little of it would be actual gambling. (Perhaps it would fit your criteria if you included sports betting). I would still consider it a gambling movie. Good discussion, though. Never doubt a small group of concerned citizens can change the world; it's the only thing ever has |

Wizard Administrator Member since: Oct 23, 2012 Threads: 239 Posts: 6095 | Thanks for the compliment that my life would make for an interesting movie. Interesting or not, neither would I call it a gambling movie for the same reasons I don't call Molly's Game a gambling movie but I think we can agree to disagree on when a movie becomes a gambling movie. Coincidentally, I had lunch today with someone who played in Molly's game, and the subsequent Toby Maguire game, a few times. Sorry, can't give the name. Molly would never approve.
