For me, Adele is the most stunning female
singer songwriter in the last 40 years. Her
vocal range is astounding, her lyrics are
classic. I've listened to some of her songs
over 50 times.

This segment of Carpool Karaoke has
177 million hits, none of the others are
even close. She's wonderful in this:

She is wonderful. Of the 20 CDs I've bought in the last 5 years (which is down from probably 100/ year for decades), I bought all 3 of hers. She has some magnificent tracks on each, but some others get the ff immediately. Nothing to improve in her voice; just somewhat uneven on the songwriting.

I should have listed her in my first post. She does belong there.

Worth a listen. So I can see what you like there.

Thanks for listening to my suggesting. Here's another one that maybe you're not aware of. Orna, a South African woman. I don't think she has done much work. But this is another one that blows me away. If you have time, let me know what you think. Her voice is very soft, in a good way, understated.

Some say she'll be the first female
singer billionaire, eventually.

All fantastic and original voices and talents. Except for Julie Andrews, though, they would be in my personal B group, more as character and attitude than total versatility and range. Julie is an A for sure. Thanks for bringing her up.

For my money, the best forgotten singer of the past 75 years is Rosemary Clooney. She just knows how to get inside a song. Pick a video from any phase of her career, she knows exactly what she’s singing.

In her prime, Gladys Knight was the top of my list. Her voice was the real deal, with none of this auto tune nonsense.

Others to consider:
Anita Baker
Jennifer Holliday
Lea Salonga

Found her voice overly childish and gutteral in turn on this particular track. Some phrasing was channeling Elvis, that deep-throated tone that's hard to describe any other way. I think she was goofing around with a kid's song, sort of mocking having to sing it.

However, same album, Alice in Wonderland, showed some serious chops. Lovely range, center of the notes, pretty phrasing, liquid tempo. All IMO.

That's two I owe you. Thanks.

Ick, I couldn't even listen to the whole
thing. She was even off key in a couple
places. There's a reason that video was
posted in 2013 and has only 3000 views
and 2 comments.

Linda and Bonnie. Putting this here because while Linda is obviously the more powerful voice, Bonnie’s understatedness sells the song, Sum of the parts ‘n all. The two together are incredible. This might be my favorite YouTube video of all.
