after looking at some of the images I think the robot on Lost in Space was a knockoff.

Robby and the "Lost in Space" robot
were both designed by Robert Kinoshita.
So yeah, the were very similar. Robby cost
MGM $125,000 to make in 1955, that's
a couple million in today's money.

It's been a long time, but as I remember Robby was not funny. I think that "Lost in Space's" biggest contribution to modern conventions was to invent the funny robot.

The funny robots were resurrected in "Silent Running" in 1972 and of course in Star Wars they became major characters.

The only funny thing he did in
FP was make a hundred bottles
of bourbon for a crew member.
Other than that he was scary to
a little kid. He was over 7' tall.

He seems friendly, but not funny.
