Age of consent

A 45 year old man managed to sign a 16 year old girl out of school 10 times in the last few months. The school is about 3 miles from me.

The mother showed up at the school to pick up her daughter and was surprised to find that she was already gone. The exact nature of the relationship between the man and the girl is not known.

The 16 year old's personal documents and jewelry had been taken from her room, her mother said The 45 year old man's personal documents were missing and, he had withdrawn $4,000 from his wife’s bank account. He has had several minor prior criminal charges which were dismissed. Court records indicate he is a concrete contractor who has been married for 12 years.

At least, possibly more, of my family ancestors were married at the age of 15, often to men who were much older. But that was in the 1920's. Although in PA the "ag e of consent" is age 16, partners who are age 18 or older can be prosecuted under laws about corrupting the morals of a minor. So effectively a 16-17 year old can only have legal consensual sex with another 16-17 year old.

For you people who have raised little Romeos and Juliets, would you favor the states standardizing on 18 as the age of consent.

If anything I expect to see a push to lower it. Way society is going.

One reason the Catholic church in Ireland had such power is they controlled the tithe houses and poor houses and bishops could therefore supply girls to the wealthy. The Age of consent was nine. Yes, NINE.

For most of this country's history the age of consent was generally eleven and was later raised to sixteen. It was the Prohibitionists that campaigned to have it raised to such ridiculously high values.

France, until last week, had eleven thru 14 was illegal but had to be proven to be forceful. Fifteen was legal in all respects with anyone including blood relatives. The only exceptions were prostitutes or those appearing to be prostitutes where the age was 21.


Rural areas often have young drivers and the Populist states generally had lower ages of consent.

The viewpoint in Victorian times was that females were unable to exercise self control and were generally ignorant of biology. In the USA up until about the 1920s women were taught to say "down there" and the word for rape was 'interfered with'.

I note that the post does not in any way inquire as to whether the girl is happy and how it is she had a relationship that her mother did not know of.
