Freeing people from guilt is what people love about Christ and His Church. Forgiveness and love is what the Church is all about.

I thought Catholics believe we have to serve time in purgatory, according to our sins, before going onto Heaven. This would make me feel unforgiven.

Purgatory is to be freed from our attachments to sin that remain even after we are freed from and forgiven from the guilt.

The Church is not to blame for guilt. Guilt is a natural and healthy response when we have sinned. Or when we have done something we know we shouldn't or not have done something we know we should have. I resonate with Evenbob that he doesn't like the feeling of guilt. Nobody does. I also feel his dilemma about how we overcome and move past these uncomfortable feelings of guilt. This is where Christ comes in.

God does not cause our guilt. You don't feel guilty for looking at porn and masturbating because of the Church. It's not something we are proud of and we know the destructive evils of porn. Same thing on a much bigger scale with drunk driving. No Church needs to tell you its wrong or makes you feel guilty. The Church offers to us a way to transform our guilt into repentance, conversion, and good actions. It frees us from guilt through God's forgiveness and love and replaces that uncomfortable feeling that all of us from Bob on down experience because of our sin, with a renewal of our goodness and encouragement to strive to do better. For the life of me I can't understand why Bob or anyone hates Christianity so much when all Christ is offering is freedom from sin and guilt and encouragement to be the precious and awesome people we were created to be.

We should feel good about masturbating, though. It's part of a healthy sex life. It keeps things working properly between relations with others. It feels good.

My generation was definitely part of the guilt over it. Strong prohibition. Men would get hairy palms. Women were just trash if they did. Everyone hid the evidence. But everyone, except maybe one person I know, did it.

Definitely a big part of oppressed desires going sideways for some people. Better to release the energy naturally than pushed into aggressive or deviant behavior.

Could you show in scripture what
it says about purgatory? Thanks.

Thanks for weighing in.

The medical need for some older men to release is more hassle than happiness. It doesn't matter what race, religion color or language a man is, if his body is physically capable of producing ejaculate, he will either make it happen voluntarily or involuntarily. If that activity is neglected for to long, there is absolutely medical proof that the man will get urinary tract infections and other misery's. No was to squirm out of that reality for men or religionists.

I'm sure it has caused some dilemma in the Catholic church trying to either spin that fact, ignore it, or claim it is some punishment by god. Or even acknowledge boldly that fact, and god either wants men to ejaculate or he doesn't, but it is going to happen regardless. Might as well spin it to the church's benefit.

Their choice apparently is to heap guilt on people, for something that isn't even by choice.
