SINGAPORE - Reprieve is at hand for churchgoers who have to queue for as long as two hours in Suntec City Mall, in order to attend a worship service conducted by New Creation Church (NCC). The auditorium seats about 1,200, and its lease expires next year. Come November, the mega-church's business arm, Rock Productions, is set to throw open the doors of its spanking new $500-million performing-arts facility in Buona Vista. The facility, called The Star Performing Arts Centre or The Star Pac, includes a lushly designed 5,000-seat theatre that covers 46,930 sq ft and is built atop a shopping mall owned and managed by CapitaMalls Asia.

The current Pope washing and kissing the feet of AIDS patients in 2005.

The images are jarring when juxtaposed. The preacher as superstar and real estate developer. The other as a religious leader enacting the job of the lowliest of servants from millenia ago.

Both images can be a little unnerving.
