Most neighborhood bars are.
Low overhead and huge profits.
But it comes with a price, you
have to deal with drunks all
day and there's a huge chance
you'll become one yourself.
I got out when I saw the certainty
of that.
There were some cool t shirts about Kodiak. I like the one that said, " Kodiak, a little drinking village with a fishing problem"

There is no middle ground, you're a
drunk or totally sober. I drove home
drunk for the last year I was there
and I was only 32. I would have made
it to 40 if I was lucky. It's a huge
influence being around drunks all
day.

My house now is withing walking distance of several neighborhood places. One is really cool, has police patches from over 100 departments. First sad thing is every place but one allows smoking. Grandfather clause. Second sad thing is that years ago I would have loved it. Now if I go three times a year it is a lot. Only place I go is the VFW for a small stakes poker game.

The places are always fairly busy, and it is all people well over 35.

Beer joints are iffy. No money in beer,
it's all in hard stuff. I had two brands
of bottled beer, Coors and Bud. Liquor
was what they drank, the markup was
1200%.

This place is one of those always-packed brew pubs. Been there at least 25 years. It is a money machine.

Sometime in the 90's I think, Alaska made " six packing the house" illegal. The crab captains would call ahead when coming in to port and buy everyone in the bar a six pack of whatever they were drinking. Really common to ring the bell and buy everyone a drink.

Pretty neat though, a taxi to almost anywhere in town was around 8 dollars including tip. My wife finally broke me of drinking and driving, although I thought myself a professional at both.

It made 110* today.
