I don't make anything of it except trends catch on and go. I see a lot of blacks riding Harleys as well. Never remember seeing that either. You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

In my 200 miles on the AT, mostly during peak through hiking season, all the through hikers were white. The National Parks see a lot of Europeans and Asians but the locals that go are the vast majority white. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

Reading more about it, blacks make fun of white people for hiking and camping. As a race, they don't like the idea of making themselves 'temporarily poor' for a weekend, living in a tent and getting bitten by mosquitoes. I have to say, I kind of agree with them. I admire people who do it, but as a kid I hated when my dad forced us into it a camping trip. Bugs and under cooked food and no TV and impossible sleeping and massive boredom. My mother absolutely hated it and made the experience even more miserable. But I enjoy watching others do it, maybe because I can't do it myself. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

At least watch the first 7min, the part about Whitney. The whole video is beautiful, Dixie uses expensive video equipment. It's why she has 125K followers. Try and see it on a big monitor and not on your stupid smart fone. It makes a huge difference. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I was just wondering that. The fire probably screwed up all this plans. Who knows what his back-up plan was, if he had one. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

I’m not due to get to Yosemite until the 19th so still 3 weeks away. It’s only the valley that’s closed currently and due to reopen on Friday. Worst case if conditions in the Valley were still poor we would probably stay in Lee Vining and do hikes along Tioga rd. That said, I read earlier that they expect full containment to take another 2 weeks so optimistic that we won’t have an issue. Touch wood. EDIT: Anyone have any suggestions for places to stay in Lone Pine and Lee Vining? Any need to book in advance or are we fine to just turn up on the day? Fri 17th & Sat 18th. |

IIRC there was some college that was booting a camping/outing student club because it was all white. Not at all racist, just that that was all that joined. I think there are many reasons Blacks don't get into it. I have met a few who just don't want to go to a rural area where there are no other Blacks. One place I worked a a Black notary flatly refused to do a job at night in some part of Appalachia saying, "it was not safe for Black people at night there." Another is you usually have to be introduced to this kind of thing. No Blacks now means they have to have a White friend who invites them. The President is a fink. |

Introduced as kids, for most people. Camping with my fam was a nightmare, you would have to pay me a lot to sleep in a tent now. I camped out with a friend at times when I was 12 or 13, hated it. Hell, I don't even like hotel rooms, I only sleep well in my own bed. Camping is a white culture thing. Early 20th century nature movement, after WWII it kicked into high gear in the 50's. That's when my dad caught the bug and tortured us for a couple summers. And I mean it was torture and misery. OMG! This is it, this was the exact tent we had. A station wagon tent, that's almost the same car we had in 1958. The rear of the wagon opened into the tent. The horror, the horror.. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Good to hear that you haven’t been displaced (yet). I don’t know about any hotel/motel info that wouldn’t be on Expedia.com, but you may want to lock in a booking in case evacuations fill up all the convenient places with displaced campers. Mind the cancellation policies/ deadlines. Air BnB may have options too. |
