Amazon might buy 50 theaters in the historic Landmark chain. Landmark has been collecting historic theaters since 1974. I wonder if you will have to be a Prime member to see a movie there.

I more wonder why they would want to get into such an awful business?

But this is not really the movie circuit business like AMC,who acquire Odeon Cinemas, UCI Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas in 2016, became the largest movie theater chain in the world, and also the largest in the United States, with 2,200 screens in 244 theatres in Europe and over 8,200 screens in 661 theatres in the United States.

Landmark is less than 50 high profile cinemas, a really possibility for self promotion particularly for the wealthiest man in the world.

50 years ago all the theaters in
my area were owned by one guy.
He said it's the only way you can
make money. Lots of overhead
and all your profit is from the
concession stand.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

It is all concessions, and the consumer is getting tired of wanting a small Coke but the smallest size is a 5 gallon drum for $80.

They guy started buying all the old theaters
when TV took over in the mid 50's. Then
in the late 60's the multiplexes in malls
finally put all the old theaters out of business.

When I was a kid, half the fun was spending
my quarter at the huge concession stand in
the 50's.

Movie circuit companies release annual reports where they spell out in detail how all their profit comes from concessions

For the three months ended June 30, 2018 AMC revenue from food and beverage is roughly 50% of revenue from admissions.
Admissions revenues $896.3 million
Food and beverage revenues $445.8 million
Net earnings $39.9 million

But Landmark is a prestige company owned by billionaires Todd Wagner and Mark Cuban. If Amazon purchases the company, I doubt very much if they care if the chain does better than break even, because the real money will come from promotions for Amazon Prime movies which will now be eligible for Oscars as well as Emmy's.
