What is race?
The Census Bureau defines race as a person’s self-identification with one or more social groups. An individual can report as White, Black or African American, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, or some other race. Survey respondents may report multiple races.

What is ethnicity?
Ethnicity determines whether a person is of Hispanic origin or not. For this reason, ethnicity is broken out in two categories, Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino. Hispanics may report as any race.

Edward Long (23 August 1734 – 13 March 1813) was a white Jamaican-born British colonial administrator and historian. Modern meaning of race as "one of the great divisions of mankind based on physical peculiarities" is dated from the publication of his book in 1774. As the word was never scientific, it has never had an exact meaning.

Long's "History of Jamaica" gives a political, social, and economic account with a survey of the island, parish by parish from 1665 to 1774. It is a comprehensive book, yet it contains some of the most virulent descriptions of Jamaicans and Africans in general. Long, in his rather shocking descriptions argues that American 'Negroes' were characterized by the same "bestial manners, stupidity and vices which debase their brethren" in Africa. He maintained that 'this race of people' is distinguishable from the rest of mankind in that they embody "every species of inherent turpitude" and imperfection that can be found dispersed among all other races of men.

The next year (1775) Johann Friedrich Blumenbach introduced a four-fold color coded division in 1775, extended to five in 1779. "Caucasian or White", "Mongolian or Yellow", "Aethiopian or Black", "American or Red race" and "Malay or Brown race".

Ethnic (adj.) late 15c. (earlier ethnical, early 15c.) "a heathen, pagan, one who is not a Christian or Jew" (c. 1400). In modern noun use, "member of an ethnic group," from 1945.

An exonym (a name of the ethnic group has been created by another group of people) and autonyms, or endonyms (whose name is created and used by the ethnic group itself).

"Hispanic" is an exonym, since Spanish speaking people from the colonies never used the term to describe themselves. The word "Hispania" is of Latin (and Greek) origin to describe the peninsula including Spain and Portugal, and is probably of Celtiberian origin.

The majority of Hispanics consider themselves to be "white" or they don't think in the same broad meaning of race the way northern Europeans did.

When the census bureau wanted to start a head count in surveys in 1970, and as a question for everyone in 1980, they decided that Hispanic should be an ethnicity and not a race.

Snoop Dogg’s debut album “Doggystyle” was released in 1993. Snoop made music prior to his first album, appearing on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album “The Chronic” and the soundtrack of the 1992 film “Deep Cover,” but they were both released years after Harris finished school.
