Only 5 months after the Lion Air crash a brand new B737-Max-8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines crashed minutes after take-off on a clear day.

Its pretty scary that it may be the same problem in both crashes due to similar circumstances
Both had a problem after take off and requested a return to the airport
Software vs manual control?

In those circumstances, the accident is eerily similar to an October crash in which a 737 Max 8 flown by Indonesia’s Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea minutes after takeoff, killing all 189 people on the plane. But safety experts cautioned against quickly drawing too many parallels between the two crashes.

This could be a massive issue which worse case could result in the termination of the B737 program.

It'll be interesting to see how Southwest reacts to this.

Right now "Boeing 737 MAX 8" is trending on Twitter and people are tweeting SW customer service worried that their upcoming flight will be the next one to fall out of the sky.

My trip to Vegas next month is with Southwest. I just checked and both of my flights are scheduled for the 737 MAX 8. I wonder if that'll change before then...

Likely to be grounded in the next couple of days I’d suggest. Be ready to ring to reschedule if your itinerary is disrupted.

Southwest Airlines Will Take Only Boeing’s Newest Model Jets From Now On
Mary Schlangenstein, Bloomberg - Oct 02, 2018 11:00 am

Skift Take Southwest is growing up. Two decades ago, when it received its first Boeing 737NG, it was a true discount airline, and its aircraft had a barebones look. Southwest’s new Boeing 737 Max jets are upscale. The only thing that’s missing is first class. From now on, the airline will receive only 737 Max planes, the latest iteration of the narrow-body aircraft that is Boeing Co.’s largest source of profit. Southwest operates the biggest 737 fleet.

Southwest first ordered 63 of Boeing’s 737-700s in 1993, serving as the launch customer for the so-called Next Generation model and helping Boeing “move forward with the development of the -700 and -800 programs,” Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly said. It received the first of the aircraft in December 1997, and now operates 512 of the -700s and 202 -800s. “We’ll continue to fly these airplanes for many, many years to come,” Kelly told employees in a regularly recorded message Monday. But in some ways, he said, the transition marks “the end of an era for this workhorse airplane.’’

Southwest is already flying about 16 Max 8s, according to the Dallas-based carrier’s website, and has 237 Max of that model on order in addition to 30 Max 7 aircraft. The first Max 7 will arrive next year.

Southwest had its 26th B737Max-8 delivered on the same day when the Lion Air Crash happened on 29 October 2018. Since then it has taken 8 more deliveries.
I suspect that Southwest better delay their Hawaii service.
