Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | In the 19th century, the English physician and philanthropist Thomas Bowdler produced a sanitized edition of 20 of the plays in 1807, called The Family Shakespeare with the "naughty bits" removed. The verb bowdlerize has been forever linked to censorship. For instance, Thomas Bowdler would leave out a prostitute called "Doll".
I was told that I am very bad at sarcasm, but I honestly didn't think someone would take me seriously about rewriting a 400-year-old play to remove the misogynist bits. It's like a return to 200 years ago when the sex bits were considered offensive. |

Flirting put into lyrics, it is quite beloved, really by *all* as we used to be able to say without some ass objecting. Which is what it is: play the song and some smartass somewhere will complain just to get attention. Plus an even more evil cadre who get satisfaction out of flexing their newfound muscle. The whole business is a testimony not to the great numbers of such people who protest, but to the lack of backbone with those who would actually think they need to quit playing the song. That won't be me. The song was written as a "meet cute" flirtation of that time, and people then understood it was in fun. How many Doris Day or Katharine Hepburn movies of the time had a similar point, before she acknowledged her interest? Probably all of them. Along with practically any other PC thing there was a small effort to point out the inappropriate sentiment in these times, then seized by the eye-roller backlash as evidence of extremism and blown into a huge thing. Never doubt a small group of concerned citizens can change the world; it's the only thing ever has |

Dalex64 Member since: Mar 8, 2014 Threads: 3 Posts: 3687 | I'm not in favor of the ban. Before this came up I had never really listened to the lyrics. There is this Def Leopard song, Two Steps Behind, that might be considered a little stalkery. excerpted lyrics: Walk away, if you want to It's okay, if you need to You can run but you can never hide Whatever you do I'll be two steps behind you Wherever you go And I'll be there to remind you That it only takes a minute of your precious time To turn around I'll be two steps behind Take the time To think about it Just walk the line, you know you just can't fight it Take a look around you'll see what you can find Like the fire that's burnin' up inside me Now there's a magic runnin' through your soul But you can't have it all, no Whatever you do I'll be two steps behind you (chorus repeats) "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts." Once you start this process there is no end. Next it will be Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Women' "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

If you find that person, let me know. I am always on the look out for something new to read, listen to or watch As soon as I hear that somebody wants to ban a song or book or movie, they go straight to the top of my reading, listening or watching list I read the 1st Harry Potter book simply because some crazy Christians wanted it banned Here's a Paul McCartney tune banned in the UK. I actually bought the 45 when it came out. I liked the song Sometimes we live no particular way but our own - Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" |

I think we've found a rare topic we all agree on.
I'm curious that way too. I saw The Last Temptation of Christ only because there was so much of a protest against it. I'm quite sure it only caused more people to see it. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

Melissa Ethridge has a song that sounds like a scary ex girlfriend If I can't love you I don't want to love you If I can't hold you I don't want to be thinking of you And if you don't want me I don't want to want you And if you won't see me I don't know what to do But oh keep watching you Until I see right through Oh I keep watching you The mind hungers for that on which it feeds. |
