Potter was not Catholic so it might have been done as one of those “informal formal” ways of showing respect. Like if I was in Canada I would stand for their national anthem but I don’t put my hand over my heart. IOW, Potter shows respect but there is always that little part saying he is not a catholic.

I use the padre here to show respect but keep it informal. I’d use Father in a formal church situation of any sort. I cant remember but I think Potter might have done the same.

Very well said. I agree 100%.

I respect the Buddhist monks who
live in poverty and beg for their
food every day. They keep to
themselves, bother nobody, don't
insist you call them by some title
they don't deserve, like priests do.
They lead a religious life, not
a pompous one like the Church does.

Don't priests have to take a vow of poverty? Also, I don't see priests going around bothering people.

A bit off topic, but when I was 21 and stupid, I went to the supermarket and bought a whole shopping cart full of alcohol, because most of those in my circle of friends were still under 21. Then a priest in full garb got in line behind me. I felt very embarrassed and ashamed. However, instead of making me feel guilty he told some story about somebody sneaking a bottle of something into a some kind of get together with nuns. This was 32 years ago, so I don't recall the details of the story at all, but he could made me feel terrible with the raise of an eyebrow, but instead ... I don't know how to put it, but I felt he was making a statement about moderation.

I could be wrong, but on the TV show I think Colonel Potter called him "padre," and everyone else, including Hawkeye, addressed him as "father."

Quite by coincidence, I just went upstairs to brush my teeth and Mrs. Wizard was on the bed watching TV. I said, "What are we watching?" She replied, "M*A*S*H." It was a commercial break. I knew were were just discussing this topic so I waited for the commercials to be over. The very next scene was of Hawkeye trying to cheer up Father Mulcahy who was depressed about something to do with a boxer and a letter to his sister or something. Anyway, in the first ten seconds or so, Hawkeye addressed him as "father."

What are the odds?

Good grief no, You should see how
some of them live, especially the
bishops. At least 10 of them in US
alone have residences worth over
a million. It's like the military, the
higher up in rank you go the better
the perks. Jesus would be appalled.

Bishops don't make that much money,
it's the unrecorded perks they get that
puts them in mansions worth millions,
gourmet meals, live-in servants, free
travel, luxury cars. All paid for by the
Church. It's really quite a racket these
men of 'god' have going.

How many do you know, exactly. They
love sticking their noses into others
business, mounted on their high
white horses of reproach and shame.

We're always seeking patterns to make
sense of the world around us. Life is
full of these meaningless coincidences.
Some people look at them as 'signs'.
The only thing they're a sign of is that
that we all live in the same tight society.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

As for me, I have no problem calling people by the title they have. However, as to FrG, "father" seems so heavy, so I go with "padre," which I mean as a term of endearment.

You are correct, it was Col. Potter that called him Padre

I went back and edited my post - giving you full credit therein

In a more polite way than above, no.

They used to have a memorial car cruise for a popular priest around here that had several nice antique cars. One priest we had his room had a nice stereo, rowing machine, and all other kinds of things that made it look almost a bachelor apartment not the room of the youngest priest in the rectory. His car was a modest Ford Escort, though. The other two had rooms that were kind of what you would expect, the kind you would see in a movie or on TV.

I will defer to FrG to verify further, but I would guess they are told to live modestly but not "poverty." The nuns, OTOH, did take a vow of poverty I believe. They lived more dorm style, and maybe had one car they all could use if they needed. Though I did hear for years they had a little college retreat near the ocean until a storm wiped it out.

For comparison, I was doing some work for a guy starting a business with non-profits and we met this head minister in some Black Baptist denomination. This guy had some kind of real nice Mercedes and lived well. He was dressed flashy and IIRC had some nice rings on. But I really remember the car. His close assistants had nice, German cars as well.

Diocesan priests take a promise of simplicity and religious brothers, priests, friars, sisters, and nuns take a vow of poverty. I do happen to agree with Evenbob that often times diocesan priests can play a little fast and loose with the definition of simplicity. However, in regards to the vow of poverty it is complete and awesome. You own nothing or any value. Things like cars and such are owned by the community and any of your gifts get thrown into the community pot so to speak.

Back to the promise of simplicity - what I don't think Evenbob is taking into consideration is that priests in the average diocese might make close to $30,000 after many years of service and they might have even paid off their car so it is actually theirs, but they don't have any home. It is true they don't have to pay for housing, but your average rectory is far, far away from the luxury houses Evenbob dreams priests live in. They also don't own a home and with the charitable giving and the needs of their parish it is hard to save up much of anything. Anyway, the priesthood is a glorious life and I love it. However, don't let Bob fool you; it is a life of service and humility. One of obedience and sacrifice. It is one where I get to help people every day and be there for their most joyous days, their worst days, and their last days. It is every Christmas the one and greatest gift I thank the Good Lord for, the gift of the priesthood.
