What is the 4th wall? What are you talking
about.

It's a term that goes back to the theater. There are three physical walls to a stage and an imaginary 4th wall between the stage and the audience. If the actor winks or talks to the audience, or acknowledges them in any way, that was called "breaking the 4th wall".

When you are watching TV you are more intimately involved because of close-ups, but actors never look at the camera.

In the final scene of Amadeus, when Salieri delivers his line "Mediocrities everywhere, I absolve you" as a theatrical piece, he breaks the 4th wall and addresses the audience. Which is very effective. But in the movie, Salieri delivers his line to the insane people in the asylum, which doesn't make sense to me.

I think the most well-known example in the movies is this one.

When I saw Godspell they broke it many times.

I watched the first two episodes last night. After some of the comments here, I was kind of expecting them to be harder to stomach than they were.

I liked the first episode (with the pig). It was entertaining.

The second episode about the spinning bikes and the talent competition (with the guy from Get Out and the girl from Downton Abbey) wasn’t my cup of tea. But with an anthology series like this, there are bound to be a couple of duds.

I would recommend that any newcomers start with the fourth season. The show is like the Twilight Zone, every episode is independent of the others.

Theater is different because 4th wall breaks are usually done to the audience. Movies and television can only assume that there is a single viewer. They are much more personal.

Top 10 fourth wall breaks. Spoiler-Ferris Bueller is ranked #1.

Did anyone catch the name of the medical office where Stefan's psychiatrist's office is? It's an "easter egg"

Think of the great Norman Fell looking into the camera after he delivers a zinger on Three's Company

What I found so unnerving about that episode, was that it was so believable.

I did not think Black Mirror was even going to have any episodes beyond the 4th season finale (which is sort of a weird tribute to all the other episodes)
