Keir Dullea, who played Dave Bowman in 2001 A Space Odyessy is still acting after over 50 years in movies. He said it drove him crazy to make that movie and hardly say anything at all. He desperately wanted some more dialogue.

I can understand that. Just the same, he gave a great performance after HAL popped a fuse.

Quote:
The movie was based on some short stories by Arthur C. Clarke, but his novel was published after the movie was released.

It's something of a mess. The Moon scenes are almost his short story "The Sentinel," with the addition of Dr. Floyd and the Russians. The novel was written while the movie was being shot (shooting's too good for it! <w>)

FWIW, the novel could have had a point...

Clarke did characterization well. he had a great, optimistic view of the future. And he was second to none when it came to explaining the mechanics of space travel (Niven uses them well, but he assumes you know all about it already). But half the time when he strayed from short stories, he tended to ramble and miss the point.

It's still the most realistic depiction of space travel.
Is that what it is? I thought it was some boring movie about a black monolith with monkeys jumping on it and a homosexual-voiced computer named HAL that turned rogue. I never saw very many science fiction movies but I seem to remember that one as simply boring.

Will Smith's new movie After Earth actually got worse review than "Wild Wild West" and "Bad Boys II"

Star Trek is a good movie, but it could have been better. It suffers from a rather simplistic, and often incoherent plot.

(1) Oblivion - (10.99 million tickets sold in 38 days)
(2) Star Trek- Into Darkness- (23 million tickets sold in 19 days)
(3) After Earth - Will Smith continues on his quest to make his son famous
(4) Pacific Rim - Noisy special effect Sci-Fi with no name actors
(5) Elysium - Another post apocalyptic thriller about dangers of pollution with Jodie Foster & Matt Damon
(6) Riddick - Vin Diesel trots out his character again for 6th time in 13 years
(7) Gravity - George Clooney; looks like more thriller/"human bravery" story than Sci-Fi
(8) Ender's Game - Harrison Ford military science fiction with an insectoid alien species

Big question is will Star Trek 2013 exceed the number of tickets as 2009 movie (34.55 million). Should beat the boring original 1979 movie (32.77 million tickets).

It looks as if the comic book adaptations will follow Iron Man 3 to dominate the box office this year
Iron Man 3 -- (47.7 million tickets sold in 29 days) tops 44.3 million tickets sold for original Iron Man in 2008
6/14/13 Man of Steel
7/19/13 R.I.P.D.
7/19/13 Red 2
7/26/13 The Wolverine MARVEL
8/2/13 Two Guns
8/16/13 Kick-Ass 2
10/4/13 Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
11/8/13 Thor: The Dark World MARVEL

Sounds good. Hope its a straight hard-boiled detective story not featuring any space aliens, supermen, vampires or zombies. Just a woman who wants to transition from rich wife to rich widow and needs a young man stupid enough to help her out.

The Star Trek movie has cooled off severely this week. It looks like it will fall several million tickets short of the 2009 movie. Foreign sales are up, of course, as could be said for all such movies as China and India builds more theaters.

With "After Earth" bombing, I don't see any real bright spots for sci-fi this year (I am not counting comic book heros as sci-fi).

Asa Butterfield, who played in the movie Hugo, is going to be the star in "Ender's Game" this December. The movie "Ender's Game" is similar to "Hunger Games" as it is about teenage children forced to participate in ultra violent activities. In this case it is inter-stellar warfare against an insect species.

I just saw Star Trek on Sunday and my theater was 1/3 full. I was surprised it was so busy on the third weekend it's been out.

No good sci-fi? What about Elysium?

Possibly "no good" was too strong of a term. I think Elysium will be a niche movie because it looks very preachy! It stars two of the preachiest actors in Hollywood.

As an informal definition a "successful" big budget film is one that sells 15-22 million tickets, which is about the same number of people that watch an episode of the most popular TV shows. Blockbusters are more than 30 million tickets. At 50 million a movie becomes nearly a cultural phenomena. Avatar sold almost 100 million tickets.

There are roughly 121.5 million people in 2010 between the ages of 16 and 45 in this country (about 40% of the population). Between 45 and 64 there were 81.5 million people. Some movies do appeal to older people, and some to younger, but most people who go to movies are younger.

Date : Millions Tickets : Movie Title
5/25/77 : 178,119,600 : Star Wars
12/7/79 : 32,772,300 : Star Trek: The Motion Picture
5/21/80 : 98,180,600 : The Empire Strikes Back
5/25/83 : 94,059,400 : Return of the Jedi
7/3/85 : 59,050,700 : Back to the Future
11/22/89 : 29,350,800 : Back to the Future Part II
7/3/91 : 48,656,400 : Terminator 2: Judgment Day
6/11/93 : 91,922,000 : Jurassic Park
5/23/97 : 49,910,000 : The Lost World: Jurassic Park
5/19/99 : 90,312,100 : Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
7/18/01 : 32,009,200 : Jurassic Park III
7/27/01 : 31,802,600 : Planet of the Apes (2001)
5/16/02 : 53,468,500 : Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
5/19/05 : 59,324,600 : Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
6/29/05 : 36,549,200 : War of the Worlds
12/14/07 : 36,724,000 : I Am Legend
6/27/08 : 31,171,100 : WALL-E
5/8/09 : 34,548,000 : Star Trek
12/18/09 : 97,255,300 : Avatar
3/23/12 : 50,838,300 : The Hunger Games

While the new 2013 Star Trek movie is clearly successful, the producers were hoping that it would outsell all previous Star Trek movies. It now looks like it will sell just over 30 million tickets.

Matt Damon is great playing Matt Damon. He's terrible at playing a character. I quite like him in some stuff (Bourne series, Good Will Hunting) and hated him in others (he was shown up in the Departed, for instance, by Leo and Mark)

Elysium does look good. I'll try getting out to see it.
