I'm mentioned in the Boston Globe today in the article What baby names say about everything else. For those interested in names, I think it is a very good article.

DId they call you for the quote or lift it from somewhere else? Hope you don't mind me asking, just curious how deep they dug.

The writer called me and we had a long talk about my days at SSA and the baby names story. The quote was legitimate, and I recall saying that to her, although maybe not those exact words.

I always found it funny how some names are so known to be beautiful people then dumped by them as the ugly people try to emulate. Melissas and Ashleys are often beautiful, but I suspect it will be quite different when those generations name their kids and there will be plenty of ugly Ashleys.

Ashley is one of many names the girls stole from the boys. If you don't believe me, think of Gone with the Wind.

I believe it and never saw GWTW, but looked it up.

Ashley as girls name didn't even make the top 1000 until 1964. Held #1 in 1991 and 1992. Been a boys since the list started in 1880. Peeked in 1980 at 282. Off in 1994.

I met a guy about my name named Ashley once, and felt sorry for him.
