I met a guy about my name named Ashley once, and felt sorry for him.

I met an older man, an executive, who gruffly introduced himself as Kermit lastname. I felt sorry for him, and I was surprised he hadn't switched to his middle name.

For that exact reason I gave ordinary middle names to all my kids. In case they decide at some point they don't care for their first name.

Personally, I can't get away with that because my middle name is Whitney, and every Whitney I've ever known was female.

Did you ask your folks why they gave you the name? The first thing that comes to my mind is Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48.

Good guess. That is where my parents first met. I climbed it, for the second time, last summer.

I think Whitney is one of the names girls stole from boys.
I go by Bobby. My middle name is Robert. It's not that I don't like my first name (Adam), it's I've always been called Bobby since I can remember.

Whitney the Wizard. It has a ring to it.

Josiah Dwight Whitney was the namesake for the mountain. As a given name for males it seems to have been more popular around WWI.
