You may know that the two most polar opposites in human demographics are both islands.

Hawaii has the most diverse population on earth. It was the last major place on the planet to be populated given that it could only be reached by boat. The native population was decimated by brutal labor and disease, and succeeding waves of people from all over the planet were brought in to populate the islands and build the economy.

Iceland has the most uniform population on the planet. Virtually everyone is descended from a small group of people who emigrated in the 9th century, and extensive genealogical records have been kept for at least 5 centuries. The other problem is that given their position above the arctic circle, they have very little daylight in the winter.

Now there is an Icelandic app to warn you about any drunken late night hook ups. It warns you audibly if the person you are talking with at the bar will later be introduced to you as your first cousin once removed at the next extended family picnic.

How about an app that tells you if the guy next to you in a crowd with a backpack has been questioned by the FBI in the past two years for suspicion of terrorist activities?

You are much more likely to encounter a close relative in Iceland... and the database is much more readily accessible.

Are first cousin marriages forbidden in Iceland? The way females were often bartered for peace I would think not but then much of Iceland's combative history is pure bunk.

I don't think that they are illegal anywhere in the world outside of some states in the USA. For a long time marriages from 3rd cousin and closer were forbidden by the Catholic church and such a marriage was the basis for the annulment of R. Guliani's first marriage.

I have actually heard that a study of cousin marriages in Iceland concluded that the ideal person to marry is your 3rd cousin. It is sort of the ideal combination of shared social background, but without the danger of increased hereditary disease.

The first cousin marriages among Pakistani immigrants in the UK is considered a critical social problem. The extremely high rate of hereditary disease is a burden on the NHS and consider a form of child neglect.

People who are interested in extending the parameters of marriage are curious about how such marriages will be accepted in the USA. If you marry in one state or internationally, and then you move to another state that forbids such marriage what is it's legality? Similar questions were once asked about interracial marriages.
