Quitting smoking usually correlates with gaining weight. I would assume going back to work had the biggest impact even if your diet became more unhealthy (drinking soda).

Quitting smoking depends. Some people quit as part of a get healthy plan and lose. Some replace smoking with eating and gain. Some maintain.

I changed three things ... I started drinking Mountain Dew again, I quit smoking, and I went back to work. Down 26lbs in 50 days. Feel free to pick any combination of these changes and explain which one caused the weight loss and how.
I don't know about the causation, but please stop slurping that Mountain Dew!

Watching international news and cringing.
We are all doing that. Someone said this Corona advice was coming from an echo chamber. I had to turn off Al Jazeera recently. Even the Kiwi's are talkin' nonsense!
We all be cringing.

But I am now a big believer in calories in calories out.

By definition you are correct. No doubt about it.

Buttttt...... VERY FEW people succeed at a strict calorie count diet.

Diet is WAY more effective than exercise for the majority of people. Exercise helps, but without diet change, will not work. I went to the gym and burned a couple hundred calories. And then ate those calories in a single Snickers Bar.

But exercise has other overall health benefits not specific to weight loss. For me, I think when I was exercising it lowered my food/snack cravings making it easier to lower my caloric intake.

Caloric intake and composition is largely dictated by pathogens.

Yes, you can exercise and then UNdo the benefit with a snickers bar but if you persist in the exercise you will get to a point where upon quitting you will no longer crave that Snickers bar.

A person with a healthy weight cannot lose 10-12 pounds a month without exercise.

Wow, really? Ya think? Good grief..
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

.

That's not what I argued, though. "Exercise has nothing to do with weight loss, that's a fact". .

Yeah, those pics of starving kids
in Africa where they look like
skeletons, that's from too much
exercise. Good grief.

A few months ago I discovered these
guys on Youtube who make a couple
million a year traveling and making
videos. They have millions of followers
and these are the most entertaining
videos on Utube. I have a whole new
perspective on what it's like to live
in places Like India, Russia, Srl Lanka,
S America.

The whole world is under lockdown
and the poorer countries have to be
really suffering. Open air markets
are closed and that's where huge
numbers of people make their paltry
livings. Now they're making nothing,
staying home and eating what they
usually sell. It's a worldwide disaster.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

His later post, about not needing to exercise in order to lose weight, yes. Obviously. Simply drop caloric intake below sustenance level. Basic arithmetic.

4. Drinking pond water got you a giant tapeworm.
You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really?

Yup. And all those 200lb loggers and crabbers consume 6k/ cal a day and just reject it. The body has a way to just shut that down. Jeepers creepers.
Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it.
