17 Richie Valens
22 Buddy Holly
28 The Big Bopper
23 Selena
25 Tupac Shakur
26 Otis Redding
27 Janis Joplin
27 Jimmie Hendrix
27 Kurt Cobain
27 Amy Winehouse
30 Hank Williams
32 Cass Elliot
32 Karen Carpenter
42 Elvis Presley
40 John Lennon
45 Freddie Mercury
48 Whitney Houston
50 Michael Jackson
52 Roy Orbison

Murders, drug overdoses, suicide, AIDS, alcohol, heart attacks, or accidents took away these singers too soon. Do you grieve for some or all of them? Does it matter if they were the cause of their own demise.

No grieving for me. I would probably only know songs from Elvis, John Lennon, and Whitney Houston.

Some of these were 50 or over, not exactly "young."

I do not grieve for people I never knew. I might feel sad they are gone. But I am not one of these types who make it as if a close person died.

It seems to me any kind of creative person often has some kind of bad wiring. As if one cause the other.

I don't grieve for people I don't know, but some I'm sad for, like Selena, John Lennon and Richie Valens, who died for reasons that were not their fault. Cases of self-abuse like Elvis and Michael Jackson I can't have much sympathy for. I didn't know Elvis was only 42 when it died, he looked much older.

I grieve for all of them
They may have had some more masterpieces to give to the world. Now they are lost.

I was going to cut it off at age 50, but Michael Jackson and Roy Orbison were two of the 20th century greatest musicians.

I wasn't sure how many rappers to put on the list, so I just went with Tupac. There are literally dozens of rappers who died before the age of 50.

(age 25) Tupac Shakur - shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
(age 20) Pop Smoke shot and killed in a home invasion.
(age 24) The Notorious B.I.G - killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles
(age 27) Stretch Queens New York murdered in a drive-by shooting
(age 37) Jason Mizell - shot by an unknown assailant in the Jamaica area of New York City
(age 36) Ol’ Dirty Bastard -died of a drugs overdose in Brooklyn, New York City.
(age 26) Joe C. An official cause of death was never released.
(age 31) Eazy-E - died from complications associated with AIDS.
(age 20) Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes - Swerved to avoid a truck and then again to avoid an oncoming car. The car rolled repeatedly
(age 41) Nate Dogg -In the years prior to his death, he had suffered several strokes.
(age 47) Adam Yauch -cancerous parotid gland and lymph node
(age 32) Prodigy - Sickle-cell anemia just days before his death and the coroner reported that he had died from accidental choking.

30--Jim Croce (airplane crash)
29--Ronnie Van Zandt and other members of Lynryd Skynyrd (airplane crash)

These are a couple that I remember from my youth...not really mourning, a little shock, but missing what else they (and many others on the list) may have contributed musically.

Selena is still a pretty big deal here in Texas...she comes up every year or so in discussions, tributes, etc.
