There used to be explosions all the
time in this country when the yokels
stored nitro and dynamite in
unsafe conditions. This is Lebanon,
they sit on the floor and eat with
their hands. What would you expect
from them.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

EB the average annual household income in Lebanon is over $60K. You obviously know nothing about the country.

Hey, I posted about 20 of them on the morning after. Someone had already compiled a bunch of phone footage in one video.

So what. I've seen enough eating/travel
videos from there to know an explosion
like that isn't a big surprise.

Today roughly 40% of the country speaks French and between WWII and the 1975 civil war, Bierut was known as "The Paris of the Middle East". The life expectancy is 78 years.

The United Nations considers it a "highly developed nation" with an HDI of 0.730 roughly the average of the world. That would be higher than the following Western Hemisphere nations.

— World 0.731 Increase 0.60%
93 Lebanon 0.730 Decrease -0.36%

94 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 0.728 Increase 0.29%
96 Jamaica 0.726 Increase 0.05%
96 Venezuela 0.726 Decrease -0.45%
98 Dominica 0.724 Decrease -0.15%
98 Paraguay 0.724 Increase 0.56%
98 Suriname 0.724 Increase 0.41%
103 Belize 0.720 Increase 0.49%
114 Bolivia 0.703 Increase 0.88%

Medium human development
124 El Salvador 0.667 Increase 0.14%
126 Guatemala 0.651 Increase 0.98%
126 Nicaragua 0.651 Increase 0.74%
132 Honduras 0.623 Increase 0.51%

Low human development
169 Haiti 0.503 Increase 0.92%

People got a different impression when there was an intractable war in Lebanon for so long, and there hasn't been all that much news from there since it quieted down. I don't think there was "news about peace" , it just has seemed to dwindle off.

Just my impression, maybe I should have paid more attention

It was the "Paris of the Middle East" and in a weird religious balance until the Palestinians came in and upset that. Then an awful 15 year civil war. Then the country became a de facto protectorate of Syria, which brought stability. Might be recovering since then, they have the great location.

It’s a contender for the second largest non-nuclear explosion.

Largest was in Canada in 1917 when a cargo ship full of wartime explosives collided with another ship just off shore.

In order not to make the ship a target, no one knew the cargo but the sailors on it. When the fire started, the sailors abandoned ship and started rowing for their lives. But I doubt they were able to make it far enough away to survive the explosion.

Considering this blast was bigger than the Beirut explosion you would need some pretty good distance.

The explosion in Halifax harbour was the largest at the time but it is likely not the largest now. Comparing blasts with different types of explosives is an inexact science. The planned Ripple Rock explosion on the BC coast in the 50's was likely larger. Beirut explosion and Ripple Rock were both 2700+ tons of Ammonia Nitrate so not sure how you decide. There was also a planned explosion in Russia about the same size. Google "Halifax Explosion" and you can see pictures, lots more deaths than Beirut.
