  1. Atlanta
  2. Portland
  3. Seattle
  4. Sacramento
  5. Minneapolis
  6. Boston
  7. Las Vegas

I'm happy to see Vegas made the list, which is an unexpected, and probably undeserved, surprise. Certainly the small contingent of advantage players has a high nerdiness factor, but otherwise Vegas is comparatively an educated and uncultured city.

Atlanta surprises me as being #1. I don't know the city that well, so won't comment beyond that. A noteworthy omission is San Jose and perhaps Austin.

The criteria were:
  • Number of annual comic book, video game, anime, and sci-fi / fantasy conventions
  • People per comic book store
  • People per video game store
  • People per traditional gaming store
  • People per computer store
  • People per bookstore
  • People per LARPing group
  • People per science museum
  • Distance to the nearest Renaissance faire

Portland has the most comic book shops per capita, Sacramento and Las Vegas are 2nd and 3rd.
Atlanta has the most game stores per capita, Las Vegas was 2nd.

Interesting... I'd love to see some Canadian cities measured on this criteria. I would expect Victoria and Vancouver to do quite well. They are the Seattle/Portland of Canada.

In the Movato blog Randy Nelson describes exactly how he did the research. You don't have to leave your computer. I do imagine you are correct.
