Its an example
Back in the day, a lot of people did not agree that Woman and Blacks should have the right to vote
Now its a no brainer
Generations from now, being against abortion and gay marriage will be just as unthinkable just as people now think being against a Womens or Blacks right to vote today is unthinkable

It is up to the politicians to make policy and the Supreme Court to uphold the law.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent.

I’ll answer:

Because “religious nuts” are crazy and there’s no such thing as an “abortion nut” (only anti-abortion nuts.)

Too me
A religious nut is taking religion over science. god will not protect you from the virus.
A religious nut is insisting an atheist follow religious laws such as banning abortion or gay marriage.

It's up to politicians to make the law and the supreme court to decide if the passed law is or is not constitutional.

States have various laws that have been on the books and in force for years regarding when mail-in ballots must be received in order to be counted, and when the counting needs to be completed and the election certified.

Will the supreme court overturn some of those laws?

Have any appeals to SCOTUS been made?

Yes, at some point a federal judge said wisconsin can accept absentee ballots for some time after election day.

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/10/27/opinions/kavanaugh-friendly-message-trump-opinion-honig/index.html

I don't know what the law in wisconsin says, but Kavanaugh said, in his justification for reversing that order,

"If the apparent winner the morning after the election ends up losing due to late-arriving ballots, charges of a rigged election could explode."

And

“Those States want to avoid the chaos and suspicions of impropriety that can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of an election. And those States also want to be able to definitively announce the results of the election on election night, or as soon as possible thereafter,”

He didn't say "state election law states that the ballot must be received by election day and it isn't the place of the court to change that" which to me would be a perfectly valid justification for overturning the federal judge.

No, he gave a couple of reasons why accepting ballots after election day shouldn't be allowed, giving no consideration to the laws of the state in question.

Also, whether or not an appeal has been made is irrelevant when considering whether or not one will be made at some time during the upcoming election.

Trump also wants the courts to ban counting of ballots after election day.

Again, disregarding whatever laws the various states have in place.

Erie county, in Pennsylvania, isn't planning on starting to count absentee ballots until 11pm on election day

It is a good idea.

I am in favor of if they do not get there, not postmarked but GET THERE, by election day they go in the trash.

If the law allowed for accepting after election day, a bad idea, then there would not have been a lawsuit and a lower court ruling.
