John Adams in 1801, John Quincy Adams in 1829 and Andrew Johnson in 1869 -- refused to attend their successors' inaugurations.

All three were single term Presidents and John and John Quincy Adams (father and son) were the first two presidents to serve single terms. Andrew Johnson was probably the most reviled POTUS in America's history, and is not shocking that he didn't want to go to his successors' inaugurations.

Andrew Johnson was a Southerner who sympathized with the Union during the civil war. He was nominated for VP by Abraham Lincoln for the obvious political reason that it showed the South that they would be included in the new government post civil war. Of course, Abe was shot to death, and northerners and southerners both hated Andrew Johnson.

One Term or Less but did not die in office.

But all in all, even among single term Presidents, attending your successor's innauguration, has been an important symbol of the nation's continuity and the peaceful transfer of power.

Trump may violate the tradition and even decide to upstage Biden's innauguration. That is apalling.

I have a bet, I'm not sure I'm at liberty to say with whom, that Trump will show up. I am starting to not like my side.

The man acts totally on a whim. If someone convinces him that he will look poorly in the history books, he may decide to attend a week before.
