I was surprised to hear on CNBC today that 82% of the money invested in Madoff was recovered and returned to the investors. I had no idea.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent.

Walter Mondale.

Has anyone in recent history lost a presidential election so badly?

McGovern in 1972. Both were 49 state wipeouts. Though I think Mondale was more set up as a jobber as they knew they had zero chance. 1972 I do not know as much about.

Reagan vs. Mondale was the first election I voted in. I also attended campaign rallies for both of them in the same day in Los Angeles. Reagan put on a great show while Mondale was at least an hour late, the PA system was terrible, and nobody could see because the press was on an elevated platform near the stage. Plus someone in the audience had a heart attack or something, which totally threw Mondale off, but I can't blame him for that.

His nickname was Walter Mondull for a reason.

Michael Collins, 90. The Apollo 11 astronaut who did not walk on the moon. Maybe the loneliest mission ever. Alone in the command module 250,000 miles from earth. He was even cut off from radio for part of his orbit when he was on the backside. Here is a quote from his book that conveys the weight of responsibility he felt.

Quote:
“My secret terror for the last six months has been leaving them on the moon and returning to earth alone; now I am within minutes of finding out the truth of the matter,”

I tried to tell my children what it was like to see those Apollo missions through the eyes of a child, but I couldn't find the words to convey the sense of wonder. Still can't.
The mind hungers for that on which it feeds.
