Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think-BBC
Quote: BBC
Iknow, you probably haven't even driven one yet, let alone seriously contemplated buying one, so the prediction may sound a bit bold, but bear with me. We are in the middle of the biggest revolution in motoring since Henry Ford's first production line started turning back in 1913.

Jaguar plans to sell only electric cars from 2025, Volvo from 2030 and last week the British sportscar company Lotus said it would follow suit, selling only electric models from 2028.

They forgot to include MINI which plans to be all electric by 2030. Their last fossil fuel car release in 2025.

While this article from the BBC does not particularly say anything that has not been said before, it makes you realize how mainstream this idea has gone.

It shows the auto industry thinks it is going in this direction. Consumer acceptance will matter. They are planning an insanely short conversion period.

2020 Motor Vehicle Production
  1. China 25,225,242
  2. United States 8,822,399
  3. Japan 8,067,557
  4. Germany 3,742,454
  5. South Korea 3,506,774
  6. India 3,394,446
  7. Mexico 3,176,600

Mexico is one the largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in the world. It is the fifth-largest producer of autoparts worldwide with USD 99 billion in annual revenues and is the largest export market for U.S. autoparts.

With all these manufacturers switching to BEVs, Mexico should announce that they will be the surviving stronghold of ICE production.

That China number is misleading as they count things line medium duty trucks as passenger cars.

Mexico by the 1990s got either smart or lucky in making all kinds of free trade deals knowing they would be the place people worked cheaper. No home grown producers but plants from all over taking advantage.

What are the top Chinese manufacturers?

The traditional "Big Four" domestic car manufacturers are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW and Chang’an.

Other Chinese car manufacturers are Geely, Beijing Automotive Group, Brilliance Automotive, Guangzhou Automobile Group, Great Wall, BYD, Chery and Jianghuai (JAC).

In addition, several multinational manufacturers have partnerships with domestic manufacturers.

As of 2012, exports of Chinese automobiles were about 1 million vehicles per year and rapidly increasing.

Most sales were made to emerging economies such as Afghanistan, Algeria, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Mexico, North Korea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, or Turkey where a Chinese-made automobile such as a Geely, Great Wall, or Chery sells for about half of what a comparable model manufactured by a multinational brand such as Toyota does.

Byton is a Chinese-German all-electric vehicle automotive brand established in 2017 and incorporated in Hong Kong, co-founded by former BMW and Nissan Motor executives. They intended to be exporting to the US by now, but have re-organized the company.

Kandi America is a Chinese had their car featured in Netflix's Tiger King and is selling a tiny vehicle in limited portions of the US.

Do any of these brands cater to the luxury market?

I would imagine German imports are more popular among wealthy chinese.

A Chinese car manufacturer, Hongqi, does make an $800,000 vehicle but it is more of state limousine for the General Secretary.

They also make this luxury SUV1 for 83,800 yuan to 249,800 yuan (US$27,506 – US$37,383). The Hongqi HS5 is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of (221HP), mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

They have an executive electric vehicle which will be released next year.

I’ve heard the Asian market really likes a massive front grill, which is why BMW changed the look of the M3/M4

There is a saying in China about BMW owners, which loosely translates to "new money people who aren't very bright". Some have even called BMW's big grille a maxi pad.

If I buy an Aptera, does that make me smart?
