What cars do you buy?

Subaru (as an example) has had a series of design flaws which tends to result in engine failures over 100,000 miles. They settled a class action lawsuit in 2016 that made a few lawyers very rich, had a few people get new engines, and a lot of other people get coupons.

Really? Surprising as I have seen many high-mile Subarus for sale and you had to race to get them as people scooped them up.

Makes me wonder if I got a new engine for my Hyundai because of a lawsuit?

I guess this is like 3rd world problems to you.

I am not brand loyal. The last 5 vehicles I have bought are Honda CRV, Mazda 6, Chevy Equinox, Kia Optima, BMW 430. I tend to buy whatever brand gets me the best deal or discount.

I am most proud of my Chevy Equinox deal. $167 a month lease with $0 down and I sold it at three years for $4000 more than my lease payoff.

That is very eclectic. I think a BMW 430 lease would be double that of a Kia Optima.

As well you should. If my calculations are correct that is a net outlay of $13 a week. Many people have a Starbucks addiction that costs way more than that.

The average lease payment for the Chevrolet Bolt EV is $333/mo with $2,000 due at signing for a 36-month term with 12,000 annual mileage limit. That would be a lot more expensive than the Chevy equinox deal.

The Subaru Head Gasket issue was so widely known and discussed and it lasted in some degree of severity from the introduction of the EJ25 engine found in Most Models from mid 1995 up until they were replaced by FB20B and FB25B for the 2012 model year. The head gasket issue overlapped the beginning few years of Subaru's incredible 12 year streak of increasing US sales that was only ended by COVID.

The excess leaking oil lawsuit was one of the most serious after the head gasket was mostly resolved. The "rod bearings" suit only applied to the WRX sports car so was relatively limited.

Subaru class action settlement resolving claims that connecting rod bearings caused premature engine failure on a 2012 through 2017 Subaru Impreza WRX or STi with an EJ-series 2.5-liter turbocharged engine.- March 11, 2019

I would say you are probably correct. I don't recall the exact numbers but the BMW was a convertible and the most expensive lease that I have ever had.

Talk about a big swing, my Cadillac Allante convertible was $52,000 in 1990.

That's $111.5K in today's buying power.

The fast moving vehicles in August over $40K (average transaction price | ATP) are
  1. $43,979 Toyota Sienna
  2. $45,001 Kia Telluride
  3. $46,258 Toyota 4Runner
  4. $49,712 Ford Bronco
  5. $59,349 Lexus RX 450h
  6. $71,192 GMC Yukon
  7. $76,847 Land Rover Defender
  8. $89,788 Chevrolet Corvette
  9. $97,359 Mercedes-Benz GLS
  10. $99,798 Cadillac Escalade

Brands with an ATP over $50K for the month of August
$51,237 Lexus
$51,466 Ford
$51,987 Infiniti
$53,595 Volvo
$54,039 Ram
$54,547 Tesla
$56,888 Audi
$58,010 GMC
$59,118 Genesis
$61,774 Lincoln
$63,700 BMW
$69,118 Jaguar
$74,332 Cadillac
$74,900 Mercedes-Benz
$82,738 Land Rover
$96,344 Porsche

Average Transaction Prices usually average 25%-30% above base MSRP because of optional trims and additional dealer markup.

It's funny to see Ford, Ram, and GMC in the list as we don't normally think of them as luxury brands.

I had no idea the Ford Bronco was almost $50,000. If I remember correctly it comes with a three cylinder engine.

It does have a three cylinder engine

Manufacturers have found that people are very willing to go up to much higher trims than they are to buy a different car.

($29,995) base model Bronco
($34,880) Big Bend
($37,545) Black Diamond
($40,450) Outer Banks
($43,590) Badlands
($48,475) Wildtrak
($58,905) First Edition

Subaru has converted the last of their 7 gasoline models to a single global Subaru platform. The model names have sort of become variations on a single car
  1. Impreza entry level sedan or hatchback
  2. Legacy mid to upper level sedan
  3. WRX is sports car (STI fast sports car)
  4. Crosstrek entry level SUV
  5. Forester mid level SUV
  6. Outback upper level SUV
  7. Ascent is a 7-8 passenger SUV

The BRZ sports car and the upcoming Solterra Electric Vehicle are built on Toyota platforms as Toyota owns 20% of Subaru.

Entry level Impreza and Crosstrek are a much higher percentage in Canada, Australia, and Europe than in the United States. Russians and Chinese only want fancy Subarus as they have a million cheap domestic cars to choose from. Subaru makes almost all of their money in the US.

The thing that's always so fake about these extremely choreographed car chases is if you watch the cop car behind them he always manages to pull off the same stunt as the getaway driver. He makes a skidding emergency brake hairpin turn and so does the cop car. Would never happen in real life but then, none of the stuff in this video would happen in real life. First and foremost they rob a bank and within 60 Seconds there are two dozen police cars chasing them. Ridiculous. The only place where there are that many cop cars in one area is a police station parking lot.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
