Edgefield used to be the Portland poor farm and the outbuildings were all dedicated to keeping the poor farm up and running. But yeah, McMenamins is in fact a brew pub, but they offer other things as well. |

"Go west, young man" has been a key phrase in the American culture for many decades. Folks unhappy with their hum-drum life elsewhere were drawn like flies on poop to the west coast. Our music praised it: "California Girl"s and " If You're Going to San Francisco" helped fuel an exodus of disaffected folks. The benign climate is the key problem, plus the fact the Pacific ocean acts as a bar to further migration westward. I moved west in the late seventies and never regretted it; I cannot say I'd feel the same way if I did it today. Drugs, homelessness, theft: the tri-fecta; when the American Dream has imploded and there's no family or safety net we now can see what it REALLY means to lose. |
