You can look up the Rotten Tomatoes ratings for the new Superman movie
Superman Returns (2006) 75% (budget $270 million)
Man of Steel (2013) 56% (budget $225 million)

"Man of Steel" is outselling "Superman Returns" by 20% in boxoffice tickets. Combined with the lower production budget, a sequel has already been given the green light.

My personal opinion is that "Superman Returns" tried so hard to be funny that it ended up being goofy instead. But "Man of Steel" went the complete opposite direction. The entire movie is deadly serious and angst ridden. Of course, the computer generated imagery allows them to destroy buildings like they were potato chips. It actually gets tedious.

I have to admit that I liked "Captain America" better. If you are going to bring back the pre WWII super-heroes, it is better to bring them back with a little whimsy. Amy Adams (as Lois Lane) built her career on charm. It's a shame to have her play this part with almost no personality.

Since it is so rare to have the love interest actress be the same age as the actor, this movie is almost unprecedented in that Amy Adams is 8.5 years older than Henry Cavill.

Never liked Soop, as I call him. There's something about
the skintight costume and the cape thats just way too over
the top for me. I always thought Lois Lane made a nice
beard, though..

I didn't realize Christopher Reeve turned down so many fairly good roles. Not sure he was the better choice, and maybe he knew it.

Turned down the lead roles in

American Gigolo, (Richard Gere)
The World According to Garp, (Robin Williams)
Splash, (Tom Hanks)
Fatal Attraction, (Michael Douglass)
Pretty Woman, (Richard Gere)
Romancing the Stone, (Michael Douglass)
Lethal Weapon (Mel Gibson)
Body Heat. (William Hurt

Wow, Fatal Attraction and Romancing the Stone were Michael Douglass's 1st and 3rd biggest films (out of 32 total).

Fatal Attraction was bigger than Superman II, and Romancing the Stone was bigger than Superman III. Lethal Weapon was far bigger than any of christopher Reeve's non-Superman movies, and of course it led to Lethal Weapon II, III, and IV.

Every one of those movies was some kind of a break out role for the actors.

You have to wonder who was advising Reeve?

It might have been a contractual right to review scripts but no real interest in working at all unless he thought it might be a spectacular role.

Christopher Reeve took one of the biggest first movies of all time, and trashed his career. He would probably have been remembered as a One-Hit Wonder if he hadn't become paralyzed. But coming off of Superman, you could imagine the romantic fantasy of "Somewhere in Time (SIT)" seemed a lot more attractive than the cold "American Gigolo (AG)". The film SIT bombed, and AG was a modest success. But Richard Gere turned AG into a part in "An Officer and a Gentleman" which was box office gold.

Reeve was a terrible actor, he was painful to watch.
The costume and FX carried him in the Superman
movies, and his stunning good looks. I suspect he
knew he wasn't very good and turned down parts
for that reason.

They still have events for that silly movie SiT
every year at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island.
Some of the movies actors even show up most of
the time. People dress in period costumes, in fact
it's this time every OCT that it happens.

I don't think he was that terrible. Probably perfect caliber for Soaps. When I think terrible, I think Pauly Shore in Bio-Dome.
