It is not just the cubes it is the usability. I haul a few times a year. Sometimes big stuff, other times lots of little things. It is fairly important to me. What I really want is the glass on the hatch to open independent.

I thought that was more common on larger SUVs than on hatchbacks.

Not for years. Kind of thing some MBA got rid of when they found people used the feature only a few times per year. What they miss is it is very important for those few times.

Yes, hatches probably never had it though "liftbacks" did.

Those darn MBAs.

Do you have an opinion on the new Hyundai Santa Cruz? From $23,990.

If you find it useless, at least it is not as pricy as the 2022 Honda Ridgeline/MSRP From $36,890

When I was delivering luggage that feature came in very handy for loading just one more bag, It lets you stick a long object you bough at THD out. It was great! And you can be sure it was deleted by someone looked and saw it was only used "occasionally." The same logic on EVs that "you only rarely need to go more than 250 miles." Well, yeah, but when I do I need that utility.

I keep going back and forth on wanting to get one. On one hand the bed has just enough utility to really be useful to me. OTOH you are storing things inside a bed, not inside the vehicle. OTOOH if I get one I am more likely to buy another project house since "I can haul!" and I really need to stop that at my age, getting too old for some of the work. OTOOOH I like the check that I get at closing on the house flip. OTOOOOH..............

For the market, I think it could be a big seller. Even the Ridgeline is more fuelish than it needs to be. What the MBAs are finally understanding is that lots of us need an occasional bed but we do not need a one-ton payload and the ability to tow a house. Just the ability to bring a washing machine home in the bed.

Look closely, this is a sedan cranked up on the suspension but a bed not a trunk. Truck lovers will laugh at it. People like me will see the utility.

The Subaru Baja (2003-2006) may have been ahead of its time.
1908 Ford Model T / Curb weight 1,200–1,650 lb
2006 Subaru Baja/Curb weight 3,485 to 3,670 lbs
2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz/Curb weight 3,704 to 4,164 lbs
2022 Honda Ridgeline/Curb weight 4,436 to 4,510 lbs
2022 Ford Ranger/Curb weight 4,145 to 4,441 lbs
2022 Ford F-150/Curb weight 4,021 to 5,014 lbs

It might have. It also might have been marketed wrong. Even on car reviews we hear about "off road capability" on so many SUVs. Guess what? I could care less! I want something that will go decent in the snow, carry what I need, and has a comfy old-man ride. I would not buy this Baja as it is geared to someone wanting to take it to the desert in CA.

What both of those trucks need is a "pass thru" like Chevy had on the Avalanche years back.

Car marketing is all about fantasy. Watch this commercial to the end.

Probably fantasizing that she is driving any other car.

I agree you have to sell the sizzle. I am not who they will market to. I got scared straight on cars when I was in auto loans.
