The transmission game is to try to get as much mileage out of a gallon of gas. So many speeds so as to not waste a drop. Maybe sacrificing longevity for better gas mileage
I have an F150 with a 6 speed and its been pretty solid. I'm at 90k. All the new Ford gas pickups have 10 speed and I'm not sure those will last as long as the 6 speeds. Time will tell.

That is a poor trade off, longevity for slightly better gas mileage.

There are very few Ford/Lincolns left with 8 or 6 speed. There looks like some duplicates in the list, but they tend to be to different versions in some relatively minor part of the design. The numbers 4,6 or 8 are the number of cylinders.

Ford/Lincoln has only one CVT model, the Ford Escape which is largely identical to the Ford Kuga sold in Europe.

My two older ('82 and '86) Volvos have what is turning out to nearly be a "theft proof device:" a manual transmission.

I bet a lot of the younger crowd out boosting cars don't know how to use a clutch, but I still lock the doors.

My '01 F-250 4X4 has been stolen and recovered twice this year.

What!? You're telling me that, in the Portland area, you have had the same vehicle (and, as a 2001, not even a particularly valuable one) stolen twice in just one year!? I don't know if it's policies or what it is, but something isn't quite right out there.

I believe that these older Ford pickups are at the top of the list of the most frequently stolen vehicles.

Popular and easy to break into and steal.

Couple that to the drug / homeless issues here and voila', vehicle theft.

Top selling vehicle = most stolen vehicle.

The top seller has been the F-150, but its bigger brothers (F-250 and F-350) are typically the ones targeted.

The first time my truck was stolen the thief cut off the cat after using the truck in a crime spree and then dumping it.

Being proactive, I had a muffler shop weld a protective anti-theft cage around the cat after I recovered it.

The latest theft seems to be simply a joy ride: no damage done other than a broken lock and punched out ignition.

I didn't follow through with an insurance claim because I was able to repair the broken door lock and replace the ignition switch doing the labor myself, using less than $100.00 in replacement parts.

How many speeds on your F-250? I think the F-150 was all 4 speed automatics, and 5 speed manuals in 2001.

Four speed computer controlled automatic transmission.

I change the fluid / service the transmission about every five years: no problems at all.

Truck approaching 150K miles.

Only issue thus far was a spark plug blew out (known fault with the 5.4L, due to not enough threads to hold the spark plug in place): I put steel inserts in the heads, no new issues with plugs to date and none expected due to this fix.

This has been a very dependable vehicle, although underpowered with the 5.4L if towing anything heavy.

Our older 2007 Subaru Impreza station wagon has a 4 speed 4EAT and which is similar to a Ford F-4EAT. The overall mileage is only 25 mpg, but it never has problems.

Sounds like you have the 4R70W :
Quote: wikipedia
A revised version of the AOD-E Transmission was released in 1993 with the Lincoln Mark VIII. Unlike the AOD-E, Reverse, 1st, and 2nd gear ratios in the 4R70-W are numerically higher, giving the transmission a better mechanical advantage and in turn, better take-off acceleration, better passing acceleration, slightly lower fuel consumption, and designed for better gearset strength; The 4th gear ratio in the 4R70-W is up 0.70:1 from 0.67:1. Although this may sound bad, fuel economy is slightly increased and downshifting is slightly decreased for less wear. On vehicles powered by the 5.4L V8, a stronger gearset is used than in normal duty 4R70Ws and Torque Converter stall speeds is also slightly lower because of the 5.4L’s increased low end torque opposed to the 4.6L. In 1998, due to durability concerns, the intermediate one-way roller clutch was replaced with a mechanical diode providing extra holding capacity and longer service.
The gear ratios are:
2.84:1 first
1.55:1 second
1.00:1 direct drive or third
0.70:1 overdrive or fourth
-2.32:1 reverse

The gear ratios on the Subaru are similar
2.790:1 first (station wagon is not nearly as heavy as a truck)
1.550:1 second
1.000:1 direct drive or third
0.694:1 overdrive or fourth
-2.272:1 reverse

Old reliable four speed transmissions are down to 0.277% of all vehicles produced in 2020. All of them are in larger SUVs and none in smaller SUVs, pickups, vans or cars. That's even fewer than the 1.064% of manual transmissions.

There are tons of complaints on Ford forums and a class action suit about the 10 speed transmission.

Not just that one.

My son bought a new GMC pickup and the transmission was plaqued with enough problems that I made a lemon law claim and forced them to buy it back.
