Evenbob Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 146 Posts: 25010 | My dad was in the Navy in World War II. He never talked about it, a lot of veterans didn't talk about it. I think when you're bored out of your mind half the time and scared out of your mind the other half you don't want to be reminded about it. He had his first child in his first marriage in September 1941. He was due to muster out of the Navy in January of 1942. And then we declared war on Japan in December and nobody could muster out of the armed services they were stuck until the war was over. There were four brothers in his family, they all went into the Navy in the mid-1930s. After the war two of them stayed in the Navy and retired. During the Depression there were no jobs, if you could pass the stringent test to get into the Navy it was a good gig. Until the war broke out. My dad scored 100% on that test at his local recruiters and we heard that story dozens of times. He was the first person to ever score 100% at that particular Recruiters Office. The Navy the Marines and the Army all had tests because if they didn't everybody would be joining the service because of the Depression. The Navy had the hardest test because it had the hardest jobs to learn. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I noted it, said to myself "interesting" and moved on. Later I needed to know how to handle the estate so I ask my lead. How you handle depends when they died as dower laws changed over the years. She asks and I say with no hesitation "December 7, 1941." She asks how I know the date so perfect. Really? The President is a fink. |

My mother who turned 87 on Pearl Harbor Day still uses the term "Armistice Day" even though she was born 16 years after the fact. I remember a conversation I once had about the first world event that we could remember. For me it was JFK assasination at age of six. But my colleague said it was the wreck of Hindenburg. |

I sometimes say Armistice Day just to make and remember the reason it is on 11/11. I use the first news event you can remember as a sort of age and maturity test. It is sort of testing when you started becoming aware of life. A marker of sorts. The President is a fink. |

The first real news I remember is the Nixon resignation. I think I was 7 years old. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent. |

I more clearly remember Apollo 8 later that same year. The mind hungers for that on which it feeds. |
