The first one, or the current? You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

Tomorrow is the 85th anniversary of the day the Duchess of York became Queen Elizabeth. She was age 36, and her daughter, Princess Elizabeth was age 10. |

Officially she was Queen Consort as the wife of the King. On George VI death her daughter Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II the ruling monarch and to avoid confusion her mother was commonly called the Queen Mother or later in life affectionately just called the Queen Mom. Wizard Administrator Member since: Oct 23, 2012 Threads: 239 Posts: 6095 | I vaguely remember the hullabaloo about Watergate and my father's intense dislike of Nixon. As far as a single day that something big happened, I would go with the fall of Saigon, although I didn't understand what was going on and why. After that, I'd say the Reagan assassination attempt. Nixon resigned when you were age 9, and Fall of Saigon when you were age 10. That is certainly much older than I was at age 6 when JFK was assasinated. But little kids remember trauma and all the adults crying their eyes out at once. You would be too young when Bobby Kennedy was shot on June 6, 1968. I can't remember a truly tragic event in the 1970-1977 time frame. The worst thing that I remember was wearing bell bottom jeans to junior high school to look hip in 7th grade, and having the Puerto Rican kids from the housing projects pound my lips into my braces. |

We didn't get a TV until 1954 so the first news I remember was the 1956 Republican convention because it pre-empted regular television if you can believe it. It was so mind-numbingly boring for a kid in second grade that I still haven't gotten over it. The next news I remember after that was Elvis getting drafted and after that it was Hawaii and Alaska become states. That was a huge huge deal. So was Elvis getting drafted. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

The first thing I remember as a big deal was Sputnik ... but it wasn't a specific date thing like Dec7th and the others I remember the alarm about the Cuban Missile Crisis. We kids knew atomic war meant bombs that wiped out cities. The date thing kicked in for me with the Kennedy Assassination, Nov 22nd 1963 I'm Still Standing, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah [it's an old guy chant for me] |
