There were some relatively small turbocharged engines back in 1984 (the earliest year in the EPA database). I suppose the objective in 1984 was the same as today, get higher horsepower out of an engine with better fuel economy. It may have been to save money since a bigger engine was more expensive. The most prevelant models to be turbocharged were domestic. Mitsubishi, Nissan and Subaru from Japan had turbocharged models. Renault, Saab, Volvo, Lotus, Maserati, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz from Europe had turbocharged models.

Chrysler got into it big. They had just the one 4 cylinder engine of their own so worked with what they had. It would be a few more years before Chrysler could and would make their own V-6. By the late 1980s they figured out 4 valves per cylinder got you about the same hp boost as the 1980s turbos but with far better durability and trurbos waned. The President is a fink. |

You seem to be correct. Flashing forward a decade to 1994 the EPA database shows a lot fewer small engine vehicles with turbochargers.
In 1984 we have Dodge, Plymouth ,Ford, Mercury, Renault ,Mitsubishi, Subaru, Buick and Pontiac with vehicles with engines under 2.0 liters with turbocharging. In 1994 we have Mazda, Hyundai and Mercury with a single model each with engines under 2.0 liters with turbocharging. In 2022 we have Buick, Chevrolet, Fiat, Jeep, Ford, GMC, Honda, Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi , Nissan, Volkswagen, Hyundai , Kia with vehicles with engines under 2.0 liters with turbocharging. The EPA presents the CAFE requirements as saving the consumer tons of money in lower gasoline requirements, but in fact the price of vehicles keeps soaring to incorporate these new technologies or the expansion of old technologies in new ways. |
