The Toyota Corolla began selling in North America in March 1968 at about US$1,700.
North American market engines:
K – 1.1 L I4, 8-valve OHV, carb, 60 hp
3K – 1.2 L I4, 8-valve OHV, carb, 65 hp

Toyota just announced the 3 cylinder GR Corolla will have ~300 horsepower.

The GR Corolla boasts a strengthened version of the 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder intercooler turbo engine found in the GR Yaris, resulting in a maximum output of 224 kW (304 PS). Optimizing the GR-FOUR 4WD system, which is also featured on the GR Yaris, to match the specifications of the GR Corolla was among various initiatives undertaken to create a car that can be safely and securely controlled even when pushing it to its limits.

While adopting the basic body framework of the Toyota Corolla Sport to enable it to inherit the high-speed stability of a long wheelbase, the GR Corolla employs a 60 mm wider track up front and an 85 mm wider track in the rear to command a high level of cornering performance. The result: sporty driving at will with peace of mind. And to complete the package, the GR Corolla retains a five-door, five-passenger layout for both exceptional usability in daily life and driving pleasure.

Since its birth in 1966, the Corolla has evolved throughout its generations into a variety of sedans, wagons, hatchbacks, and SUVs to meet the changing lifestyles of Toyota customers over time. With the GR Corolla joining the lineup as a sports car packed tight with driving performance and functionality ready to be embraced by many customers, the Corolla series will keep on continuing to evolve.

The Corolla has been one of my favorite cars. I have had five of them and all of them did well for us—minimal maintenance and great longevity.

Not sure if we will get another, But this one looks interesting!

This is part of their GR= Gazoo Racing sub-brand.

The fact that the word "Gazoo" is the same as the name of a Flintstone's character introduced in the show's final season (1965-66) is pure coincidence.

I used to follow motor racing and the magazines I subscribed to did also: Car and Driver and AutoWeek had good coverage.

But my how times have changed.

AutoWeek is gone, Car and Driver allegedly took them over and they have zero racing coverage.

Indy Car and Formula 1 no longer seem to resonate in America among all but the cognoscenti; so I have to ask: is automobile racing relevant any more?

I too did not care
Never really followed the sport
Until
Netflix
This is a worldwide phenomenon with Netflix
1st season
The 2 top teams , Mercedes and Ferrari , said no access.
They saw how a struggling Team like Haas (which is more interesting to follow) with Guennther Steiner as their race director become an international celebrity with his behind the scenes anger at his drivers.
All the teams are in and give Netflix access.
It's a fun series to watch. 4 seasons so far covering the last 4 years.
I'm now a Formula One fan as are many worldwide simply due to Netflix. I know all the drivers and race directors.
Can't wait to see Formula One cars racing down the Vegas strip in front of the Bellagio fountains.
