Yeah it left the original station at 7:35am, and ended up arriving at my final station at 10:30ishpm (it was about 50 mins behind schedule they said). So I think it came out to something in the 15-16 hour range.

If you don't want to mention the cities, could you at least give us the distance between them if driving?

I can see it as a reasonable alternative to flying if time is not an issue. But, not as exciting as I thought it would be in my head.

What would be "exciting" about it? Train travel is only really viable in the northeast. It works there because it fills the gap of taking the hassles out of driving or/and for city people who do not own a car and flying. For trips of a few hundred miles. It is nothing more than transportation.

Probably was more exciting at one time. Not sure how feasible or reliable car travel really was for long distance early on. More dirt roads. Roads coming to dead ends. You needed gas stations along the way. Less infrastructure.

It was about as "exciting" as flying on People Express in the 1980s. The idea of going somewhere would be exciting. The fact that you went on a train was nothing, it was just how you got there. And it was not particularly comfortable. Maybe if you spent big bucks for a sleeper it would have been tolerable.

I could not imagine doing more than 10 hours without a sleeper. The only long trips I have taken are to Austrailia on a plane and it was miserable. 14 hours is too much. Obviously I can't afford a sleeper seat on those flights. I think they were close to $8000.

It would be about a 11-12 hour drive, if you only stop to get gas and bathroom stops (no long meal stops etc....) and traffic is reasonable.

I have done the drive in less with only one fuel stop (I measured it perfectly at the exact fuel point, which luckily was open because its kind of in the middle of nowhere, so it was a bit of a gamble) and zero bathroom stops and it was close to ten hours (also overnight so no traffic).

A flight is about 1.5 hours.

Its just over a 700 mile drive.

Its Savannah GA, to Philadelphia PA. There are a lot of direct travel options from planes to trains to driving (its pretty much a straight shot up I95).

Supposedly hit a dump truck. Doubt if it's the train's fault.

There’s a story on a link site called INsider

My sister and I squeezed into Amtrak's $600 roomette for 35 hours. Look inside our 23-square-foot space with a closet, beds, and no bathroom.

They seemed to think it was worth it.
