Sorry, twenty minutes is unacceptable for we fast-paced, impatient Americans.

Back to the drawing board.

I don't have an electric car but 20 minutes sounds reasonable to me. Just enough time to go to the restroom, grab a "gas" station hot dog and a 60oz cola. If I am driving 1000 miles a 20 minute break every 300 miles sounds perfect.

Gasoline has to conform to standards; no reason battery packs can't. A regular gas station has to have gasoline trucked in. So, that's a cost that would be reduced in exchange for maintenance.

The space requirement made me think of those towers they build to sell cars. Build up not out.

Gasoline is mostly all the same, gas tanks are not.

Perhaps tech will advance to the point that the exterior of EV's will be covered in a wrap that converts solar energy into electricity?

This EV thing won't really get traction til the battery / power issue is resolved: they need to be smaller and very fast charging (somehow).

Pretty sure engineering solutions have moved beyond the 19th century.

The batteries in Tesla's range from 1000 to 4000 pounds. I don't see changing a 2 Ton battery in 15 minutes. Tesla's charging station are limited to 30 minutes many others to 40 minutes. The fuller the battery is the slower the charging rate gets so 100% is seldom the goal.

Changeable batteries are very popular in Taiwan for scooters. The more powerful scooters take two batteries. The batteries weigh 20 pounds apiece, but have a good handle so almost anyone can pick them up.

This London Times articicle discusses some of the pros and cons, but essentially concludes that it is not likely to succeed.
IS BATTERY SWAPPING FOR ELECTRIC CARS A GOOD IDEA? Way of the future or dead on arrival?

The EV revolution will likely prove to be an amazing boondoggle .

The cars aren't the problem, it's the batteries and sourcing adequate electricity.

Hopefully new discoveries will ameliorate these issues, otherwise "Katie, bar the door!"

I will predict you're going to be 100% wrong. I would predict more than 100 but that's all there is. : )

I hope I am incorrect, but please explain where all the needed energy, "clean" engergy, will come from.

We're talking a huge leap in demand and no viable plan to supply same.

Wind and solar won't be enough: back to those nasty fossil fuels.

Nuclear.

100% clean, and very effective. And, very safe. We should be building nuclear plants as quickly as possible.
