That surprises me. I had no idea the average person kept a new car for over 8 years. I am not surprised the average man keeps his wife for less than 8 years.

That number has to exclude leases.

I would think it would be much lower if it included leases. Most leases are 36 months and some are 24 months. I thought most people only kept a new car for 5 years.

If only you could lease a wife.

The average man spends more time choosing his vehicle than he does a wife. This is reflected by the average vehicle is kept for 8.4 by the first time buyer and the average marriage lasts 8.2 years.

Did you meant to say "he average man spends more time RIDING in his vehicle than he spends riding his wife?"

To be fair, keeping vehicles for a long time is financially sound. Keeping a spouse that you are unhappy with for a long time is not (often when you get close to 10 years or more alimony comes into play so if you want to divorce that is about the right time to get out).

If only we could do a frame off restoration of the wife.

I am sure that is also true.

It seems to me you have 2 extremes. People lease every 3 years or people buy and keep forever. Leases used to be promoted for 4-5 years but in the 2000s the current system of 3 years seems to have stuck. It was not planned but it did not "just happen." I really noticed when a millennial once reacted to me mentioning a story about a guy's wife getting a 4-5 year lease then said she would buy it out for another 4 year term. She didn't realize leases used to go longer.

People like myself hate car payments and work to limit or eliminate them from our lives. Others accept them as life and keep flipping cars. A few lease for business reasons. I love people who lease.

I always hated payments but working car loans and seeing the negative equity was a "scared straight" thing.

So do what I did when we bought a new CX-5 for my wife: pay cash.

Otherwise drive older solid, used vehicles that you maintain yourself, like I do with my Volvos and the F-250.

My daily driver is a sharp '82 Volvo turbo.

Mostly what I do. My point is too many people accept car payments as part of life.
