The new generation of Toyota Tundra and Sequoia seems pretty expensive to me. What do you think of paying $75K for a Toyota?

I think all these new vehicles are crazy overpriced. At the bottom they add requirements like backup cameras making them more unaffordable to the common person. The bottom of the market coming up then allows the top to go further up. Some of the Detroit pickups can now hit almost $100K.

$100K! Are they on dope?

I saw some video of people with $1,300 a month payments on these things.

Yeah, I think they are on dope!

I do wonder if more people are like me saying "screw the fancy car" or are more saying, "why not?!"

If they've done away with low end models, that would be news. Many companies have had high priced models. Maybe the news is what models they choose to make high end.

I just toured the BMW factory near Spartanburg
I think it's the largest BMW facility in the world
Amazing factory with robots doing all the welding
Of course they had the latest models on display with price
Prices above lower then what I saw

Sequoia is not the highest price SUV ever, it's just that Toyota Motors created a brand for high priced vehicles. Lexus has several model trims over $75,000.

Lexus sells it's most expensive three row SUV, the 2022 LX 600 with a 409-HP* TWIN-TURBO V6, FULL-TIME 4WD ( $88,245 - $127,00) .

Toyota was more of a mid-level brand with the Highlander and the 4 Runner some of their more expensive models. Now we have the new prices on the Tundra and Sequoia, With the destination fee you can't get a Sequoia for less than $60K.

Highlander: $36,420 - $50,675
4Runner: $38,805 - $53,270
Tundra: $36,965 - $75,245
Seqouia: $58,300-$75,300

In comparison a 2022 Acura NSX Type S starts at $169,500. But the most expensive model sold under the Honda Brand is the $52K three row Pilot.
2022 Honda Pilot
Sport $38,080
EX-L $40,310
Special Edition $40,910
TrailSport $44,810
Touring $44,870
Elite $50,370
Black Edition $51,870

Subaru's three row SUV does not sell for more than $50K at the highest option
$33,895 260hp 2023 three row Ascent
$36,495 260hp Ascent Premium
$41,295 260hp Ascent Onyx Edition
$41,595 260hp Ascent Limited
$48,195 260hp Ascent Touring

Actually, I do have a theory of why Toyota Motor North America is selling the Seqouia ($58,300-$75,300) under the Toyota brand instead of the Lexus brand and it has to do with CARB. I would like to hear some speculation first,

My theory is that Toyota Motors felt pressured to declare that Lexus would go full battery-electric in North America, Europe and China by the year 2030, But they are covering their basis by introducing the Sequoia SUV under the Toyota division with MSRP ranging from $58,300 to $75,300.

The most expensive Lexus SUV is the 2022 LX 600 ULTRA LUXURY which is surprisingly only a FOUR-SEAT CONFIGURATION with an MSRP of $127,345

While the majority of the Lexus customers will willingly switch to EVs a percentage will prefer gasoline vehicles. Toyota doesn't want to lose those customers to the likes of the Acura MDX Type S which costs $73,095 Fully Loaded. Acura may not switch to 100% EVs until after 2030.

The last 10 days for me of having no electricity makes me wonder about EV's. Granted, gas was hard to get but at least stations had it when they got the pumps working. My biggest concern is when essential vehicles become electric. I can't imagine if the tens of thousands of service trucks I am seeing after Ian couldn't operate.

These are the registrations in California for first half of 2022
  1. 20.8% Toyota & Lexus
  2. 10.7% Tesla
  3. 9.3% Honda & Acura
  4. 8.9% Ford & Lincoln
  5. 8.9% General Motors
  6. 7.1% Stellantis
  7. 5.1% Nissan& Infiniti
  8. 4.7% Volkswagen Group
  9. 4.5% Kia
  10. 4.2% Mercedes
  11. 4.0% Hyundai & Genesis
  12. 3.8% BMW & Mini

===================
smaller automakers can meet requirements with PHEVs
===================
  1. 3.8% Subaru
  2. 2.1% Mazda
  3. 0.7% Volvo
  4. 0.7% Land Rover & Jaguar
  5. 0.3% Mitsubishi
  6. 0.2% Other

When these regulations were set up, BMW had a significantly larger market share than Subaru. Now in 2022 Subaru is only 0.27% smaller than BMW.

Since 2021 Tesla has surpassed
Honda & Acura
Ford & Lincoln
General Motors
Stellantis

If Tesla continues to stay in #2 position for years to come, I think there will be some kind of backlash for state regulations creaing such an advantage for a single company.
