"Don't be up your own bum" was Dame Helen Mirren's advice to young starlets who get in trouble with drinking and the law.

Frankly, I am not precisely sure what that means.

"Pull your head out of your @ss" = "Stop ignoring the problems around you" according to urban dictionary.

Is that the polite British equivalent of the same thing?

In the USA it would mean not paying attention to surrounding events but in the UK its a bit more emphasis on the fault involved being one's own.
