I read once that Alfred Hitchcock defined suspense as what happens when the audience is aware of impending peril, but the characters on screen are not.

It makes perfect sense.

Now, what would you call a situation where the audience knows answers that the characters, on screen or on the page, are not even aware of? Further, what if the audience learns later on their answer was wrong or incomplete?

Back in the 50's there was probably a good chance most Americans of average size would be sucked entirely out of a broken airplane window. Nowadays I imagine the average American is too fat.

The evolution of "sexual" morality in politics:

1980s: Gary Hart loses all when an affair is exposed.

1990s: Clinton seems to be about to lose all when an affair is exposed, but manages to spin his way out of it.

2010s: Trump's multiple adulterous affairs make no impression on Evangelicals devoted to family "values."

I'm having a very bad episode of dissonance.

It's well-known, not to mention believed, that the various stories of the Trojan war took place in pre-literate times, thus were transmitted orally for generations until people wrote them down.

The problem is I don't see how it's possible to establish, never mind manage, a large, complex city like Troy, or a large, complex army like Agamemnon's, never mind on a ten-year campaign and siege, without any writing at all.

Writing, where it developed, originated in accounting. one simply cannot keep count of, say, a city's treasury or an army's resources, without writing down lots of records

Well this sucks. Only noticed National Park Week was free today, but @10pm is already over.
