I agree with Soopoo. Granted, these were nice progressive well funded schools in upper middle class suburbia. I had wonderful talented teachers. Had one that made me appreciate Shakespeare. It can be pretty bawdy and he let us in those jokes. He was an amateur actor and when we read different parts in class, he would take a part and the play would just came alive. My school, no requirement to stand for the pledge and many did not and it was no big deal. This was the emergence of black power early 70's. Many Blacks did not stand for the pledge. Nobody blinked. Very liberal school. I take my civic duty seriously. Jury duty, I hang around all day in the jury pool room till released(never got on a jury). I always vote. Me too. Filed them all in the trash can as soon as I got them. Last one was in the 90's, they finally gave up. Five people in my wife's fam answered the call, not one of them ever got on a jury. I have better things to do with my time than play stupid games. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Unlike you I have very little sense of civic duty but I always attend jury duty because I want to get on a jury. I have never been on one either. I scoff at patriotism and people who mimic it through the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner. I have to attend monthly state government meetings in Nevada and they all start with the Pledge. I just shake my head and have disdain for the whole thing. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent. |

Tampa has a pretty good jury system. You get notified by mail that you have to serve on a particular day They provided a phone number to call the night before jury duty You call and there is a recording stating which jury numbers need to show up Sometimes you are released on that call, sometimes you have to show up Most times, the call releases me, once I had to show up Tampa jury pool room is big and can hold about 200 people. Tons of seats, tables and electric outlets everywhere and the room has free high speed wifi Sometimes we live no particular way but our own - Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" |

Ever see the Modern Family ep where the son admits that 25 years ago he kicked his dads only hole in one in the hole. Pretty funny. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
