North Korean defectors address misconceptions.

1. Their system is actually captilistic in the way it operates. It is referred to as socialism officially. It is still poor.

2. They're not brainwashed. They play along with the government because it is dangerous not to. They usually learn the truth from smuggled media, and other N. koreans with access to outside information. They watch smuggled media from S. korea and China.

3. Life is hard, but they actually are happy despite the hardships and they take care of each other.

4. All the published dangers are real enough. Being executed, sent to camps, and people still want to escape because of lack of freedom.

I pondered 14 * 14, yes I had a reason, and knew at one time I had memorized it, but alas it slipped away - I had it wrong. So I will know it again for a while, but 14 * 14 = 196 may slip away again without use.

The multiplication tables I memorized in grade school , up to 9 * 9, stick with me unfailingly though. At one point as a teenager, in high school, I decided there was good reason to memorize them up to 15 * 15, and did. Curiously, these later memorizations slip away now, something to do with how the brain works at different ages I guess. If I review one, it sticks with me better than if I had never learned them, I think.

I spent a few moments searching the internet for discussions about whether kids are taught the tables now - apparently only rarely it seems. I have mixed feelings about that, instinctively feeling that is a bad thing. I will concede learning them doesn't do much to advance you in math. On the other hand, I still find it handy at times to know them, and if learned early enough, stick with you a lifetime. It makes me feel the kids are being deprived.

August in AZ, imagine it's 1940 and
no air conditioning. They say the
invention of refrigeration changed our
world more than any other invention.

It preserves our food, lets us drive and
work and live in comfort, and opened
up whole parts of the world that were
closed off before. Before air, NYC was
a ghost town in August. They would head
north, those that could afford it. The
city is insufferably hot in Aug. The
reason congress recesses in Aug is
just tradition from the days when DC
was a hot humid hellhole in Aug and
there no way to get cool.

3:30, looks like it isn't going to get much higher than the current 113 ? If it's going to be this insufferably hot outside, I'd just as soon it go ahead and hit the 120's. At least Havasu would have something that makes it unique, rather than just insufferable like so many desert holes in the desert SW.

So, I'm rooting for 120+, as it has been before. I want this global warming breaking heat records. Even as awful as it is outside, this has been the mildest spring and summer we have endured since coming here in '10.

Bring it sol.

This is where we reverse things. In Feb
we're bitching about 8 above zero for
the high and you're saying it's 80
in AZ.

This week the weather has
been gorgeous, upper 70's and no
humidity. Small thunderstorm going
thru right now, still great out.
