For the vast majority of the Deaf, closed-caption doesn't help]

Are you saying the vast majority
can't read or write? I thought
writing notes was an integral
part of being deaf.

I can get out of my depth here pretty quick, but if taking notes is going on I can't picture it being in English much. I am talking about deaf-from-birth here; I'm telling you they learn sign language first and are very limited in other forms of communication without further education, but I might be wrong about how late in their education many pick up written languages. I don't know the percentages for 'can't read or write' at what ages. I feel confident we will see more translators who do the sign language translations as time goes on, I'm willing to bet on that and that we won't hear it's not necessary any more.

They live in this other world, I'm telling you

I always thought reading was a
huge thing for the deaf. It's
one of the few things you can
do for entertainment that
involves no hearing.

that's what we tend to assume, but you have to know a spoken language

this comes up when you google "do deaf people know english".

Quote:
Because deaf people learn ASL more easily than English, most have low English skills. The deaf do not have sound to help them learn to read English, so how do they recognize printed words?

also, if you click on some of the other,

Quote:
What language do deaf people think in?

... most completely deaf people think in sign language. Similar to how an “inner voice” of a hearing person is experienced in one's own voice, a completely deaf person sees or, more aptly, feels themselves signing in their head as they “talk” in their heads.

click on the other ones too

"Since deaf readers generally don't speak English, they can't sound out words to access their meaning. Instead, they need to try and associate each written English word with a signed ASL word."

The gold standard in whether you actually are fluent in a foreign language was always do you think in that language. If you are thinking in your native language and translating on the fly you are still not really there.

I changed the video to the latest one checking on that dated 7-13 but seems to be the latest on you tube anyway; seems to be not weekly but every few days, didn't catch a pattern to it but didn't try too hard

no closed-caption!

It's nice to know someone has already thought through the question of whether you could build a house that would survive a volcano.

If Hitler escaped to South America or wherever, all he needed to do was shave off that mustache?

Troubling joke of the day.

What happens when a kid gets on the Batman ride at the fair?

A: Both his parents die.
