It wasn't till the 16th century in EU before chairs were used by regular people and not just the rich and privileged. I almost have to separate this Pope from his church and its history; he repudiates everything I find objectionable about past practices, and embraces that which transcends any religion in his priorities. While he would object to being personally venerated, he is the Pope of Hope and Serenity, and personifies the best of Christianity. I suppose we have the abomination of Benedict's time to thank for the Cardinal College's choice of Francis, in some ways; certainly the choice of both a South American and a Jesuit were reactionary.
