The median American home in 2011 was built in 1974, has three bedrooms, two baths (not 2.5 baths) and is 1800 square ft. Central Air is now in 2 out of 3 homes, and 1 out of 3 have a usable fireplace. One in 6 homes has a swimming pool. Median cost is under $1000/month.

New homes are now up to about 2500 square feet.

Does anyone here have an average home? You can check more than one option.

We all live in Lake Wobegone where all the homes are above average.

As a single guy I don't need half that much space. I live in a duplex with about 650ft per unit and a basement and garages of the same size on my side. (garages and basement do not count towards sq ft I was always taught.)

If you want to see why "families can't live on one income anymore" just look at the houses. When I was a kid central air meant you were "rich." An in-ground pool was something very, very few people had, even "rich" people. Now the houses are near twice as big for families half the size as before.

Just the HVAC requires some extra income in many cases.
