The gentleman in front of me at the VIP Services checkin at the Atlantic City hotel I frequent had the following conversation with the VIP checkin clerk:

Man: "I don't know how much I am going to be gambling this weekend"
Clerk: "Oh, why's that?"
Man: "Well, for some reason there has been an issue lately with my disability and food stamps and they have been coming in later than expected"
Clerk: <look of stunned disbelief>
Man: "Don't get me wrong, I am still going to play, just not as much as I normally do until the benefits get straightened out from Obama"

Is it just me or is there something wrong with a seemingly able-bodied man (yes, I know, could be a mental deficiency) talking about his disability checks and food stamps all the while holding the highest-level player's card and checking in at the VIP Services are of the hotel/casino? (Only players with casino hosts can use the check-in area so apparently he plays enough to have not only the highest-level players card but also a casino host)

Disability check? well, OK.

Food stamps? Casino host? that's another thing.

Maybe it's just me, but in my book no self-respecting man would ever admit to using food stamps. Single mother with children does what she has to do.

Yes, in my neck of the woods growing up there were people turning down assistance in hard times due to pride, so maybe all that kind of thinking in my system is just old-fart-itis.

Yes, probably is. I knew a couple who would separate their groceries so he paid for the liquor and imported cheese because she was on food stamps even though they lived together and went to the same law school. Meanwhile some people in Boston who owned apartment buildings got food stamps. Everyone got them.

In the Depression, NYC had Three Penny Restaurants for those who were not destitute but surely needed help or who simply needed a way to avoid accepting charity.

What was that actor who spent his life putting luggage on buses at the NY Port Authority... when he had to file for welfare, he sent his wife to do it. He couldn't face it. He had to work security at various clubs to make ends meet and the club owners sent him out to Hollywood for a screen test. Given who the club owners in NYC were, he was the one acting hopeful who really did hit town with a guaranteed screen test. Whether he passed or not was up to the Hollywood types but he was definitely going to get one... you don't say no to those guys when they ask for a favor like that.

On edit: Danny Aiello. Played alot of Mafia type characters. Wasn't hard for him to play roles like that.

Now. Everyone has food stamps. Every mother has something that lets her buy milk.

I said it before and will say it again, if you are on food stamps, welfare, or WIC your name should be on the self-exclusion list. You get off the list when you get off the dole.

And remember, we hear all this stuff about how the world will end because food stamps are being cut by $1 a day for most recipients.
