Nareed Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 346 Posts: 12545 | I had an idea: coat potato wedges in egg and breadcrumbs. Then I had another idea: combine them with onion rings somehow. Not bad, but not workable. So I dropped it. Until I had a third idea: use cebollitas. Great! they can be easily covered in egg and bread crumbs, plus the tails can be used for the milanesas dish I'm doing. Best of all, they can all go into the oven together. I could use pearl onions, but they're more expensive and a total PITA to peel. I'll let you know how it went after I do them tomorrow. Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

Nareed Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 346 Posts: 12545 | The cebollitas came out well. The potatoes with breading were great right out of the oven, but only so-so reheated. I find this odd, as my oven "fries" are good up to a week after cooking... Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

Half spoiled pears taste great as does this Hispanic favorite that I used to detest, cream cheese and guava pie. English muffins as your only meal of the day can be pretty good nutrition even if you had to eat them without anything on them at all. I don't cook often, but when I do there is definitely garlic involved. I am lazy so I tend to use the jarred minced garlic. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent. |

I cook every day, everything under the sun. Whole ingredients, from scratch. It helps that I went to cooking school many years ago. Avoid jarred minced garlic. It's one of the few modern things that can still get botulism, especially if it's in oil. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

DRich Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 51 Posts: 4963 | Are any of the major supermarkets doing any programs to compete with the popular mail order meal companies (Blue Apron, etc)? I would gladly buy a meal kit from the supermarket if all of the work was done and I just had to cook the food. I want my meats already marinated, vegetables already chopped, and everything in the package so I only have to cook it. If the supermarket offered two different options a day I would be a customer. I don't think the mail order ones would work for me because I think most of them are frozen and you would have to thaw them out ahead of time. With my schedule on many days I don't know if I will be eating at home until I am on my way home. It is not unusual for me to not eat any food at home for over a week at a time. I have six supermarkets within 5 minutes of my house so it would be much easier for me to pick it up at the supermarket and be home cooking within 10 minutes. Fleastiff Member since: Oct 27, 2012 Threads: 62 Posts: 7831 | Garlic is wonderful stuff but let it oxidize after being chopped then put it in the pan. If anyone finds a recipe for garlic soup, let me know. I don't mean some garlic flavored soup, but actual garlic soup. It used to be very popular with travelers along the Silk Road. More garlic in one bowl of garlic soup than most people eat in a month. Garlic and botulism? Never heard of that. Guess I've been lucky. Prepared meals? Its a very profitable niche. Some supermarkets merely assemble all the ingredients and a recipe card in one place, other supermarkets just have a space where an entrée and a variety of sides are available each in some sort of microwavable container. Just as more and more supermarkets are selling pre-packaged school lunches, many are also selling pre packaged dinners, prepackaged salads, etc. If I buy those plastic containers of raspberries, etc. How long would they last in the refrigerator before turning moldy? |

Most garlic has the botulism spores in it naturally. Suspending it in oil encourages its growth and can make it deadly. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
