Just saw a time travel movie, Midnight in Paris. It
was OK, a writer has the means to go back to
the 20's and meet Hemingway and Fitzgerald
and all the Paris gang. The 20's part of the movie
is well done, it has the gorgeous Marion Cotillard,
I would watch her in anything.

Tried to watch "Love Actually"

I was actually enjoying it, and it seemed well made, but then some scenes were just too syrupy sweet.

Afraid I was going to get Diabetes. Turned it off and deleted it from the DVR.

Well it was advertised as syrupy.

If you want an R-rated British love story from the same period with a lot more bite than try Closer by Mike Nichols. I did see the play, and I would have to say that the play was much better.

Seen it at least 4 times. Hugh Grant is
charming as the Brit PM. It's a feel
good movie, it picks you up on a
down day. Loved it.

Yesterday the internet cut out around 9 pm, and I finished watching "Oz the Great and Powerful," which was being shown on a cable channel.

Meh.

I didn't care enough to even list what's wrong with it, but I can say two things:

1) I love the Little China Girl. The character, the CGI, the acting, the sound effects, all first-rate.

2) While the idea of using stage magic to defeat an enemy is a good one, it seemed to require villains who are so cognitively handicapped they should have been harmless to begin with.

And that's too bad. Back in WWII the British actually used stage magic tricks to fool the Nazis in several occasions. These efforts were led by a stage magician named Jasper Maskelyne. He managed to hide the port city of Alexandria, Egypt from nighttime attacks by the Luftwaffe. he used mirrors to obscure the Suez Canal from air attacks, too. These are very significant achievements.

The first night the Suez Defenders received "'do not shoot "' orders, his strobe lights brought down one more plane than had ever been shot down in the earlier raids where they opened up on the Luftwaffe with everything they had.

Life (2017)

A recently discovered Martian life form gets loose on the International Space Station and chaos ensues.

It really is a mixture of Alien (1979) and Gravity (2013). It borrows heavily from both.

It's entertaining and suspenseful. You can definitely find worse ways to spend 1 hr 45 mins...

It's amazing how many monsters are intent on eating human flesh. Alien monsters, prehistoric monsters, supernatural monsters. I think it's based on how political monsters operate in real life.

The first Star Wars: Episode 8 trailer should be released this week (probably Friday morning).

But this meme accurately sums up my feelings at this point:
