Did you read the article?

Yes. Think about what else is out there that "translates" well. "Beauty and the Beast"? "Dunkirk"?, even "Wonder Woman" isn't as simple to bring to audiences overseas.

Worldwide, "Mummy" has grossed in excess of $375M in a little over two weeks. It will end up in the black.

I don't understand how a "$95 million loss" translates to "in the black," but it's a free country. Believe whatever you want to.

Just saw a film based on Baudelaire's homage to opium. Artificial Paradises. A Brazilian film with a few establilshment shots in Amsterdam. Couldn't follow who was who and what was real versus what was drug induced fantasy. I know such drug-frenzied electronic music festivals exist. This was sort of a beach side Holy Ship but darn although those naked Brazilian women are gorgeous, the movie was confusing as hell.

I would like to put in a good, very good, word for the movie Lion. Just finished watching it on DVD. Simply a very engaging story that speaks to the bond between mother and son, brother and brother, and the family in general. All told through a very engaging story. I'm not one to cry easily, but came close at the ending.

Normally, I'm a science fiction kind of guy but this movie reminds me that some of the best stories are to be found right here at home.

Its a movie that makes you feel better about humanity, especially since it is based on a true story . They did change a few facts to make it a better story, but it's not maudlin or full of cheap tricks to play on your emotions.

If you are tired of computer graphic imagery, this film had a $12 million budget and it was practically made with hand held cameras.

Dev Patel was age 18 when he did Slumdog Millionaire is now 8 years older.

Mummy is doing a little worse domestically than Oblivion did four years ago, but is doing better in the foreign market. But it made roughly $300M so far.

The Mummy (2017) Production Budget: $125 million
Domestic: $64,413,670
+ Foreign: $236,830,459

Oblivion (April 19, 2013) Production Budget: $120 million
Domestic: $70,171,915 (after 14 days)
+ Foreign: $197,061,337

Tom Cruise almost never misses on relatively middle level budget films and he hits it out of the park sometimes with Mission Impossible.

Tom Cruise's 37 films grossed $9,088.8 million worldwide since 1981
Tom Hank's 47 films grossed $9,097.4 million worldwide since 1984

For some reason Tom Hanks is seen as a "never miss"movie star, but Tom Cruise gets terrible press for everything that returns mediocre box office.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (October 21, 2016) Production Budget: $60 million
Domestic: $58,697,076
+ Foreign: $103,449,000

Jack Reacher (December 21, 2012) Production Budget: $60 million
Domestic: $80,070,736
+ Foreign: $138,269,859

Valkyrie (December 25, 2008) Production Budget: $75 million
Domestic: $83,077,833
+ Foreign: $117,198,951

Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation (July 31, 2015) Production Budget: $150 million
Domestic: $195,042,377
+ Foreign: $487,671,890

I dvr'd some of the earlier Transformer movies. Possibly the most ridiculous concept for an action/sci-fi movie. At least the movie was popcorn worthy.

Well, maybe half a container.

Recently saw "Cars 3". If you've seen the trailer, you've pretty much seen the movie. There's a confusing "twist" at the climax of the story (especially if you are an automobile racing fan), which really comes off as a play to make the brand appeal to new markets. It's kind of sad to see Pixar behaving so "corporately", (even though the Pixar folks manage to get in a few self-deprecating gags regarding brand saturation into the script). It is easy to imagine the toys and games that will appear with tie-ins this Christmas.

The character voiced by the late Paul Newman gets significant screen time. I am curious if his voice was cobbled together from existing recordings, performed by a "sound-alike", or electronically tuned.

My impression is that Disney marketing made a list of goals and key elements that the script needed, and then a story was devised around it. Since there is really nothing "new", the plot is flat and lifeless, and the run time feels "long". It's kinda like watching NASCAR nowadays.

Technically, the animation is top notch. There are obviously scenes included to make the folks who forked out extra big bucks for 3-D glasses feel like they got something out of it, but if you haven't seen the film yet, save your money.

I give it 4 mud-flaps out of 10.

I can't even see the trailers to these
cartoon movies, they're have no
interest to me whatsoever. I love good
acting. Standing in a sound room
reading a script all by yourself for
a cartoon character isn't acting.
It's being paid a huge amount for
doing almost nothing.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.
